Ummmm wtf?!

- Symbol, Al, Name, Aluminum. Atomic Number, 13, Atomic Mass, 26.9815 amu. Melting Point, 660°C, Boiling Point, 2467°C.

- Melting point of typical structural steel; ~825ºC (1517ºF)

Am I the only one that noticed this!?

While you're at it, why dont you make a custom exhaust manifold out of aluminum? Or a hotside housing for a turbo?

after doing some quick research (read: googling) it appears my theory is flawed. i apologize, and am shutting up (i knew there were full copper heatsinks, but i thought they weren't in production as much because of cost and i thought the zalman al-cu hybrid actually performed better than the full cu they offer)

Look I dont care that yall dont believe me about where I used to work. But just to humor you. The place is called Supreme Corp of North Texas. Its at 500 Commerce Blvd. here in Cleburne. Its one of only about 5 places that make armored vehicles. And yeah, Loomis Fargo trucks are made from 3/8 inch aluminum sheets. They are then layered with a ballistic foam that actually makes them bullet proof. We also made Dunbar armored trucks, which are again made from nothing more then sheet metal panels that are layered with ballistic foam. The only trucks we ever built that used strictly ballistic steel where SWAT vehicles for LA and Chicago. Those used Level III Ballistic steel plates. Everything else was lined in ballistic foam.

Dont believe me? Go look it up.

I worked there for about 2 years right after I turned 18. I have fabricated more parts then are even on my car. So if I KNOW that I can build my own intake, thats my business. Not yours.

Holy crap. This thread turned ugly after the second post.

If you want to build an intake. Do it, and lets us know the results. You wil have to experiement though. Have at it

So if you know you can fabricate the intake and dont care what we think, then go ******* build it and quit making a jackass of yourself. Your not going to get any respect or help by posting bullshit on this forum and trying to get us to belive it...

He's taking it as us ripping him apart, I know that my posts were just meant to be informative, not degrading... well, until he claimed to be an expert on aluminum and what makes it a better material, and a few of the other random, out-there claims. Plus, his attitude towards a lot of people here, not just in this post but in others (200 mm TB, swap an RB into an FC in less than a week total etc). He hasnt been making a great impression thus far.

Yes, Mazda did a lot of R&D in designing the intake manifolds.
There's an SAE paper out there that covers this - the ideal length is about 10" to 14" from plenum to intake port.
Mazda figured this out - this is why all of the fuel injection 13B's run in this range.

Also, you need to figure in the Dynamic Effect - which people have already mentioned - about the shockwave that bounces between front to rear rotor when the intake ports open and close.
The S5 VDI takes this into account the most.

Folks are right about COPPER being the better conductor versus aluminum.
Aluminum is lighter by mass - this is usually the reason why it is used versus copper.
Remember, Mazda was trying to keep the RX-7 weight down - the aluminum radiator core with plastic end tanks is a good example of this.

To the OP...
You need to grow thicker skin.
You act like a baby when you whine and moan like that.
We're not here to stroke your ego.
You are going to get criticism, especially with your method of presenting your ideas.
If this is how you react in normal eveyday life, I'm surprised you got this far.
Last time I checked, building "bulletproof" vehicles has nothing to do with intake manifold design on internal gasoline combustion engines - I'd like to hear arguments otherwise?

You sound like a moron.
You remind me of other ******** I know.
You're right - my comprehension sucks.
I didn't call you a moron or an *******, so I'm sure I haven't insulted you in any way.

My little rant about aluminium vs. copper made it a long way I see .

To the people that think just because Mazda spent lots of money over 2 decades ago designing an intake manifold (which must mean it's awesome), keep in mind that it's a poorly balanced piece of crap compared to the Renesis intake manifold. But saying that it isn't bad for it's intended job. It could be better though. Just because lots of money and time were spent on it doesn't mean it can't be improved upon. They were limited by ecu technology back then. If they weren't, we'd have seen a single throttle plate setup with valves opening various runners as rpms rose. Just like the Renesis intake. The Renesis intake on the other hand is very difficult to improve upon. Not impossible. Just difficult.

Again, you totally miss the point.
Nobody said the stock intake manifold is "awesome".
Nobody said it was the best.

99.9999% of the people here are not capable of improving on the stock design.

THAT was the point.

I totally agree with you here ted. He needed to be nice about the situation, and not get all huffy. I told him on the first page to play nice and just go ***** deep into the project, however he kept "defending" himself making himself look like an *******.

There are FAR FAR! better ways of solving this type of thing rather than start childish name calling. You complain about the 20 year olds, and make fun of Canadians, when many people on this forum(many of whom have proven to be FAR smarter than you) are Canadian, so why make fun of a whole group on this forum.

ALSO when you call people out for what they do, then keep calling them out, yet the prove you wrong time and time again, shouldn't you just stay down? Classic knows what he is doing if he builds cars, which means he knows his ****, and is not some random guy on the street.

I totally agree, if he was nicer in the first place, it would have been easier to get information out of us to help him. Just like what I said with ted.

That said, here is my 2 cents. Go for it...Aaron did make his own, why couldn't you? However, there is flow you always have to think about. Aaron is a smart guy, i'm sure he tested flow at least once.

All in all, i say go for it...you have nothing to worry about, but I would hate to see it run with it and something happen to the motor. Take measurements, and take your time, lastly, have fun with it.

good luck
chris
As you can see...I told you very early on to play nice and we would play nice with you. I learned early on if I am nice and i need help, i ask nicely and wait for a response, even if I am waiting for a day or so(with a bump) I still get a response.

This again proves my point. If you were nicer and more accepting of our(classic, aaron and teds, not to mention other's point of views) then you would have seen nobody said "ZOMG THATS A STUPID IDEA" they told you to go for it however they felt the design of the manifold was still functioning well. You act rude and you get people to act rude to you. Building things at work is totally different than building them at home, so don't come in with your "couple of hours" bs, because frankly(and this is where i stop biting my tongue) when did a "couple of hours" become "a few days?" To me, a couple of hours means like...maybe...2-3 hours?

As i read through the last few pages, I just saw the hole you were digging getting deeper and deeper because you decided to keep flaming people. If only you would have said "look, im going to be making on Saturday, i will post then, thanks for the support, sorry for being a douche-and-a-half." we would have been more then able to say things like "its ok man, good luck and post lots of picture!" instead you got flames burning your ego.

My thought is this. If you come into a forum and tell people how to run the show, even when they are smarter than you, expect to be playing with fire. If you talk the talk, but you don't have screenies, don't talk at all.

In the end...just play nice, and you wont get sand kicked in your face. Because in life, there will always be a bigger kid in the sandbox.

OK. I think at this point things have been covered, everyone has had their say, and the topic is now far from the original intent of the thread.

Closing the thread now.

Thanks everyone for being so civil. It's nice to be able to close a controversial thread without having to delete any posts or give any warnings.

There are a few people right now viewing the thread and if anyone is typing a long an informative reply, PM it to me and I'll post it.
