Custom Foot bar (infini Copy) with pics!

I have been looking around for an Infini foot bar that goes in the passenger foot well for quite sometime, and finally decided that id just make one. I really like the idea of having something for the passenger to brace themselves against. For the bar i used 1" thick solid steel rod, and heated the ends up with a torch and bent it so that when its bolted to the plate its 1 3/8" from the top of the ECU plate. Heres some pics, its not yet finished because im gonna grind it smoother and have it powder coated. Let me know what you think!

You did a nice job bending it and aligning the mount plates but sheesh...1" solid barstock?

Too bad it doesn't tie into the suspension or something.

I don't recall exactly how strong that ECU plate is, I'd hate to have IT fail before the bar.. But it certainly looks nice.

Make sure to update us once it gets powder coated and installed!

yea, the passenger's foot will bend the ecu cover, go thru the ecu, and bust thru the firewall before you bend that bar. Solid is serious overkill... an 0.065" wall chromoly would be more than enough for that, and weigh a fraction of what that does

because the infini rx-7's could go light speed, and when you brake hard at light speed it's nice to have something to brace against so you don't fly throught the window at light speed too. lol.

Well if the Infini had it I must have it. Riiiight, just because some rare Japanese model has something, that shouldn't automatically make it desirable. I like to do things for a reason, not just because it's JDM. I bet you can't even explain why you want it, or what benefit it's supposed to have.

Oh well, whatever makes you happy...

I duno seems like a good idea. I dont get why people go crazy about the japanese parts for the most part the US got the better interior bits and the US wheels were MUCH better looking. check out a japan spec s4 interior and tell me the steering wheel isnt the worst thing youve ever seen. only thing jspec fc's had was they were all turbo. would make finding a decent TII possible in Houston. I see 10 FD's to a single TII here and it's always been that way...they all must of died down here in the heat.

A very similar "foot bar" was also an option for Z cars.
My '71 had one.

I don't think any of my (rare) passengers ever figured out what to do with it.

Maybe driving around in certain cities your passenger would need one.

Looks good for what it is!

Well, actually, i do have a reason for it. I take my car up a lot of twisty mountain roads, as well as autocross, and road course race it. So when i have passengers, which is quite often because my girlfriend loves riding when i race the car, it will give her a better surface to push off of, and lessen the amount of muscle strain on her. So thats why i did it. Oh yea im all into JdM yo!, damn your an ***... Why dont you think before you speak and consider why is was made in the first place. There was a reason they came up with it originally, it wasnt just to be different.

As far as how thick the bar is, I couldn't figure out how to bend a hollow tube. The solid steel allowed me to bend it and not crease the bar. I guess only time will tell if the ECU plate will hold it up, but i have a feeling it will be strong enough, ive stood on it and it holds, plus the pressure will be at an angle and ill brace it to the floor.

Im glad some of you guys like it, I think it will be very useful. Im gonna test fit it in the car tomorrow, and post up a few more pics.

what the hell are you talking about? the wheels are all the same (except the gay phone dials and i believe the s4 t2 wheels werent available in japan). the interior is the same, just on the other side (except the gt limited steering wheel). the infini had the sweet knee pads on each side of the driver, the foot bar, the pimp suede seats. the gt limited had the digital climate control, and more of the jdm models had back seats.

Fill with sand, cap both ends, heat, and then bend. Remove caps drain sand.

Like I said, whatever makes you happy, but what's the matter with bracing off the floor and grabbing the door handle? I mean, push the seat forward a couple notches and you're there. That'll only concentrate the load on that not so thick piece of metal, vastly increasing the chances of it being bent. One really helpful thing I've learnt is to get the seat belt to lock (pull hard and fast), then buckle it up. It takes a few tires to get it right, but when you do, it holds you in pretty well.

Since you can obviously weld, or have access to a welder as evidenced by the attachment brackets, why not make it out of pipe and weld on a couple of elbows?

All I see it as is a reduction of passenger side leg room. But to each his own.

k, i guess i have to ask, wtf is the real point of the thing? considering how 7s dont really have a whole hell of a lot of leg room in the passenger side, why would you want a bar that rises up another 2" or so, causing less room?
idk, maybe just a case of practicallity maybe?
and to the best of my knowledge, and i studied the history of datsun for a school project a couple of years ago, no Z (in america, not talking jdm) EVER had a stupid bar in the passenger side stock, theres no reason for it!

peace

The other pic that 87 t-66 posted was of the original, you can tell by the plate that it is meant to be on the left side of the car rather than the right. Infact, his pic is the one that i used to get my idea of size and stuff. I wrote to him asking where he got his, and if he could get another, but his came from a real infini that he found when he went to japan.
