Curiosity...

Everyone who has seen anything on the new MazdaSpeed Miata knows that it has the six-speed transmission. Now, what are the odds that that transmission, with an FC bell housing, would work on our cars? I know that I'm gonna get a bunch of "Well, why would you go pay that much for a transmission" and such things as that. This is just a hypothetical question. Like the subject says "Curiousity..."

um, have you looked at the tranny's we have? the bell housing and trans are 1 CAST PEICE. if you want to, you could make or have made an adaptor bell housing to mount the tranny to the engine, but other then that, I have no idea. I belive the demension's are the same, except for the length, but that may be the same, too

Does anyone make a 6-speed for a FC? I'd like to know, like I said, I'm just curious about this stuff.

the 6 speed miata and the rx8 share the same tranny. the miata version will not bolt to the rotary, the rx8 will.

rx8 trans will bolt to the engine, but you're on your own for a rear mount, as the rx8 and miata use a ppf

HKS made a 6speed dogmission for the FC, it also cost about 6 grand.

Whats the difference between a "dogmission" and our regular transmissions. I just remember that a "dogbox" doesn't have any syncrho's so you have to "shift mad quick"

"ppf" = Power Plant Frame -- The cross member piece between the transmission to transaxle/diff that adds rigidity. The FD had one. I cannot confirm that the RX-8 or Miata have one.

Edit: I also cannot confirm the FC dogmission by HKS but they do have one for the FD and it is about $8,000.

Yes the miata has a PPF. Ive worked on them and pulled rear ends out and such.

As far as what the "dogmission" is, is it used straight-cut gears, vs helical gears in a normal transmission.

The trannies in Rx8's are garbage just like the 350z(almost identical tranny). I havent heard of anyone breaking them in the 8 yet but i have 2 friends who have gone through a total of 4 trannies in the 350z's/ they are trash. I'd assume that the 8 doesnt make enough torque to break them yet...

Here is a good picture of straight gears, and helical gears. When you put your manual tranny in reverse and you hear that wind up toy sound, thats the sound of the straight gears. The teeth clack together to make that sound. All the forward gears use helical gears, or gears with teeth at an angle.

actually if you're considering a 6 speed go drive the rx8 or a miata, its not worth it on the street. the gears are so close that you just have to shift a lot more. and the rpms go UP on the freeway compared to the 5 speed

if youre auto-xing or road racing though, its great theres the right gear for every corner

I know that with a little work you can get a RX-7 tranny into a miata (I don't know if it's a TII or an FD tranny). So you could probably put a 6 speed in the RX-7, some of the newest miatas have a 6 speed, not only the mazdaspeed ones.

speaking of sweet miata's anyone checked out fly'n miata's site recently, they offer a bunch of new engine mods. Well new to me, last time I was there was when I had to decide between getting my 7, or a miata.... still trying to figure out if I made the right choice 3,000 dollars and 9months later

My dad's got a flyin miata. It's a 1.6 with a FMIII turbo kit (one of only 7 made, and only 6 were sold) it's basically a FMII but with a divorced wastegate. Man that thing's fast! It's got about 220rwhp at 12psi and can make around 260 at 14-15psi. That's in a car that weighs about 2200lbs, so great power to weight ratio.
