Cross-Manufacturer Injector Interchangeability?

*Not an actual tech question, but something that piqued my interest.

Last week, I brought my fuel injectors from an 87 T2 (so, 550cc low-impedance brown connectors) to a local shop for flow-balancing, cleaning, and new o-rings. It was the sort of place where you'd only find V8s and bushy mustaches as far as you could see. When I got there, I told them what car it was for and forked over the injectors. One of the mustaches just stared at it for a while before saying: "huh, aren't these the injectors off a Mercury Marine?" I don't know if he meant the boat or the Mariner/Ford Escape, but given the ties between Mazda and Ford, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter. Regardless, I'm curious.

Well anyways, my injectors are back (now absurdly shiny and sporting fluorescent green o-rings) and likely not headed into the car until the transmission is fixed. In the interim, does anyone have a Mariner/Escape that we could compare the injectors to? This would be really interesting to actually verify. It might be an oddball solution for N326 NA guys looking for a fuel upgrade.

Mercury Marine...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Marine

Nothing to do with Ford. If anything, Mercury marine has closer ties to GM and Cummins since their 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L and 6.2L engines are based off of GM and Cummins engines.

Also keep in mind, Mazda did not manufacture those injectors, they where outsourced from a 3rd party (not sure who exactly, but probably Bosch).

^ Yes, there's a famous catalog that allows you to put in a part number and get applications. So if mazda used a bosch injector (educated assumption, but could be a Denso or something else) and it had a number, the catalog would tell you where it was used. Can't think of the name right now (I even searched for "cross reference catalog" and similar), so maybe someone knows.

No, but that looks like a really good one.

It was more of a generic catalogue, not auto specific. Kind of like a reference for purchasing. Thought it started with a "G" or "H". I remember the company being one of those names that own a shitload of other companies. Kind of like P & G but different.

I know the Rockauto catalogue, for example, when you click on a part and then info, it shows the applications.

Mazda uses Nippon Denso injectors, almost exclusively.

so the T2 injectors are just off the shelf denso's, however @550cc they are quite a bit bigger than any piston engine, so basically there isn't another car that uses them.

Good list of injectors by flow rate, with Bosch P/N's and some OE applications.

Stan Weiss' - Electronic Fuel Injector (EFI) Flow Data Table

BTW ND licenses Bosch designs, Bosch pretty much owns the market on EFI injectors.
