Creaking from rear of car {not clunking}

I have a 1990 TII with little over 80,000 miles on it. It has Koni 6 way adjustable shocks on all 4 corners. I noticed when I go over speed humps or any humps (i have a little hump going into my drivway) there is a creaking noise which sounds like it is coming from the back...but it could be the front also. It is obviously at slow speeds when i hear it I wouldnt be flying over speed humps. do any of you have any idea what it could be?
Mazda said something about two little link things in the rear of the car that are like 125 bucks apiece and he said are a pain in the *** to put in....kinda like labor would be real high. which i dont mind having them do, i just dont want to spend a bunch of money and it still not be fixxed.
thanks for your replies

creaking is just one of the noises that worn or unlubed bushings make.

Its probably your exhaust wiggling around. I dont have my rubber O rings that hang they exhaust on right now, and i hear this alot.. its probabl just your exhaust moving from worm hangers or something.

If you don't have the O-rings... what does your exhaust hang from in the rear?

Your best bet would be to have a friend stand outside your car while you go over bumps, to find out for sure where the noise is coming from. Then, take a look under your car and look for obvious things, like broken or missing exhaust hangers, loose heat shields, or stuff like that.

When I bought my convertible it did the same thing and it drove me crazy. I also remember ... the noise was louder when the weather was warm

I had the rear links replace about 4 years ago, and I haven't had the noise since.

Same creaking problem with my 1990 gxl - 64,000 when it gets hot outside july , august ..
Don't drive my car in the rain or winter at all .. have to spray the rear stabilizer parts with wd40 and then can of teflon lube .. parts must be drying out ....

Thanks for all the post.
when I get some money I will probally let mazda replace the link things. It makes the noise wether it is hot or cold outside. I had a 88 AE and a 89 GXL and they creaked when it was cold but it was up front and when i turned the sterring wheel...different problem.

The tech at mazda said he had a bunch of Series 5 TII's he had to replace the link things around 70 thousand miles. I doubt it is exhaust hangers or anything like that cause the rubber o rings are there and doubt it is the hatch cause it feels solid. The car is in pretty good condition so it shouldnt be too many things making it do that.

thanks again

dont have the dealer do it. buy them from mazdatrix. they are 65 dollars each and are the same ones you will get from mazda. if you have a jack you can do it yourself in 30 min.

Thanks. I will get them from them and I might have mazda install them. I hate doing mechanic work. I think the mazda dealer i go to kinda goes up on the labor when you supply the parts...so i would probally loose my saving on getting the parts from mazdatrix. I might try it myself..you said it would take 30 minutes...tech at mazda acted like it was a bitch....which i know that would help him out in the easy money department if it isnt hard.

But this tech was pretty cool with me in the past. My ABS light wouldn't go off. Took it to them for some work and that was one of the things I wanted them to check. He said it needed two relays. I ordered them and I was going to bring it back to let them put them in and he said man you can put those relays in can't ya. I said I guess so where they go?.....anyway he proceeded to tell me how to do it and it made the light go out. I thought that was cool of him. So I would be inclined to think if he said it was hard it would be hard to replace. you never know til you try I guess.

do any of you know what it would intale to change them out? it is totally stock except for the Koni's

Jacobcartmill I will check the sway bar bushings out nest time I am under there. I am in no rush to get the creaking gone I dont think it is that unsafe or anything just annoying.
thanks everyone for your replies

To make sure i get the right thing are these the links
we are talking about?

86-92 Anti-Sway Bar Links
The original equipment anti-sway bar links have an amazing amount of compliance in their rubber bushings. The 89-92 RX-7's still have compliance but are made of plastic, and we have already replaced some that were broken.
The increase in handling firmness and steering response is very noticeable when our bar links are installed, even when retaining the original anti-sway bars. The adjustable links also allow setting the bars to "zero pre-load" with the weight of whichever person is normally driving the car.
86-92 Front Links Kit H-M010F
86-92 Rear Links Kit H-M010R

just making sure I get the right thing.
Thanks

check to see if your anti-roll bar came off it's endlink. A bolt fell out of mine so it was craking like crazy. I took off the rear wheel and saw a antiroll bar hanging in the air and the endlink down low. The bolt snapped or backed out. Put a new 10 grade bolt in there, no more problem.
