Crazy Whirring Noise - Bearing? Driving me insane!
When I drive my car (especially when cold, cold as in not warmed up - see pic below ), I get this whirring noise that rises and falls with the revs. It is VERY loud and annoying when I first get going, but it usually quiets down a bit as it warms up. Any idea what this could be? My dad thinks a bearing is going bad. Power Steering maybe? I really have no freaking idea. Thanks in advance for the input...

I have the same thing in my 87, its very annoying, but it seems to disappear altogether when the car warms up, so id imagne if it was a bearing it would still make it when it was warmed up too, but i dunno, im curious for an answer too.

Seems like it usually doesn't matter if the clutch is in or out. Engine was rebuilt 3k miles ago by local mazda shop. Same noise no matter what gear. Obviously, i'm not reving to 5k in 4th or 5th gear all that often. It is just equal to the revs just twice as high in pitch.

Is the tranny full of oil? Could it be a bearing in the tranny? Maybe the main drive gear bearing combined with a bad pilot bearing? Just a couple of thoughts.

Throw out bearing for the clutch. When cold it'll make that noise but in warmer weather or after the car warms up it will go away. I've got one of those myself on my n/a.
Or its the airpump.
We're not there so we can't hear see and feel the car. So its just a guessing game unless you get out and really listen around.
A transmission that has a low oil level will make those whirring noises also. Top it off and see what happens.
It sure isn't a engine bearing though. I refuse to believe that. Period. Just does not happen.

Main drive gear bearing in the tranny.
Hailers - Why are you so quick to refute everything? The main things get brought up every day. I'm trying to expand the thinking a little.
Why would a T/O bearing make noise all the time if he has some freeplay?
