Talking crate or quirky rotary

I have just recently bought an 1988 Mazda RX-7 with the need of a motor. Now the owner of this car knows quite alot abought the rx-7's and the way the motors are and suggested maybe putting a V-8 or something of that nature into this car instead of a rotary. I am not sure what to do because I'm not all that familiar with the rotary engine but I don't want to miss out on the good things it offers. Any help would be much appreciated.
