Crap I broke it! 3000 RPM idle
I just went out for a drive now that I got it working!!! YAY. anyway Im driving along and all is well, then BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP so I get off the gas and put it in neutral... 3k rpm. so I put it in gear and it drops to 2000 rpm for the gear, then accelerates me up to 3k rpm where it holds 3k rpm steady.. It seems like its constantly boosting too. though the gauge shows nothing. Now I 3k rpm my way home and shut her down.
Turn it back on... 3k rpm. so I closely inspect the engine bay and the Vac line running off the compressor leading to the boost controller then to the wastegate blew off. I fix it and put a nice new clamp on. Start the car... 3k rpm. So I check the slack in my throttle cable and its WAY more then enough, just for ***** and giggles I take my throttle cable OFF, start it up. 3k rpm. please please help me! I want to go driving again, to find all my other mysterious problems!

On my 3rd gen the idle set screw fell off and jammed the throttle body open and the car would rev to 5k. you said there is alot of slack in your cable so it is possible the TB is jammed open like what happend to me.

Actually, I just got my car back together and it was revving at 3k RPM. The only thing I had changed, really, was getting the BAC working again. So I pinched off the hose going to the BAC valve, and it went back to a normal idle. This was just last night, so I'm not quite sure why it did this yet, but its something to think about.
Also, I didn't think the fast idle cam boosted the idle that high, I thought it only boosted it to 1.5k or so. The 3k idle is the accelerated warm-up system, and I honestly am not sure what actually boosts the idle. Once I figure it out, I will post it up.

Well, it was not doing it untill I went for a long drive. Then the coolant beep started going off. Then it started doing the 3k idle thing gay. I will check my throttle screw, I really REALLY dont want to get rid of thermowax and all that, I want to auto-cross tomorrow and hate to start another god damn project. I dont have a BAC valve. if my fast idle cam is jammed can I spray abuncha PB blaster at my throttle boddy and wack it with a hammer a few times or something, I am getting awfully sick of pulling this car apart.

I just zip-tied the fast idle cam up on mine where it never interferes, works fine just have to keep it running for a minute or two before it will idle on it's own. My engine has low compression though too, so yours may just crank up and idle normally.

which one is the fast idle cam, Can I clean the thermowax passage without pulling the TB, I am getting really really sick of pulling my UIM and my small snap-on torque wrench that I actually trust is on loan

The thermowax valve is screwed onto the TB, so you should be able to take it off without removing the TB. At least there aren't any gaskets to remove with the TB. I can get it off and back on in less than 5 minutes now.
As for me, I don't have the thermovalve on mine, so that can't be my problem.
Dazed - I'll bring mine out as soon as I get it running well, hopefully in the next few days. It has been down for ever until I rebuilt the engine this winter. Once it got got again, the coolant temps were higher than I wanted so I tore it down and put in a new all-brass rad. Hopefully that will help me out with the temps some.
