CRAP! boost (woosh) no power.

ok today I took my car out for a test drive with the CAI however after about 10min of driving and about the 3rd time to boost I heard a loud shhhhhhhh noise comming from what sounded like right in front of me when boosting. So I figured maybe just a vac cap came off or a vac hose however it didn't mess with my idle so I then thought that maybe it was only when there was air passing threw it at boost..........hum......well sure enough I look under the hood at all the vac caps and hoses and all are in place and zip tied down. Well where to go from here. Is there any good way to find something like this??? All the ic hose clamps are tight and none are broken. Damn this sucks I hate this kind of leak.

check to be sure a hose didn't split or get cut on a sharp piece of metal or worn through by a pulley, etc. a split in a hose could hold vacuum so the idle would be decent and leak under boost, it would also not be visible easily to the eye, try squeezing the hoses to see if there is any cracks or splits.

np and good luck in the search for the WHOOOSH!

btw, you could get the turbo to spool up in neutral with sudden bursts of WOT, it may help you pinpoint where the leak is coming from.

Spray carb cleaner around the pipes while the car is at idle.... when it dies... you found the leak!!!!!!

This may sound grusome. but Have you checked the condition of your compressor wheel?

that does sound grusome and I just installed the turbo on the car and there was very minimal side to side shaft play and no front to back play and turbo spun freely so I don't think the turbo is to blame and that wouldn't make that loud shhhhhh sound when the turbo kicks in.

A worn turbocharger can definately make some pretty interesting sounds. Might want to take off your TID just to make sure.

The turbo when the compressor fins are chewed up or bent up, make a woosh sound and makes no boost. So that could be the cause I would definitely at least take the TID off and take a good look. I hope it is not but better to rule it out!

I just put this turbo on like 100 miles ago guys it's not that! the shhhhhhhhh noise is comming from a hose somewhere right infront of me in the engine compartment. I can hear it. It does build plenty of boost just escapes out of whatever vac hose or seal around pov that is busted or leaking.

i see you have a FMIC so i assume your tubes from the intercooler to the TB sit right in front of you in the engine compartment, have you looked at those hoses and pipes closely?

yeah I'm going to check again. I have a pov right there as well so I'm going to make sure the sealant on that thing isn't shot as well. I only have like 3 vac lines left in the hole car so it can't be that hard to find I'm checking it tomorrow again for any split vac lines etc... After that I will post the results of the cai.

worst case, if you can't find the leak you could remove and test the hoses/intercooler by adding water to them and adding a few PSI of air pressure to check for a leak, but for it to lose all boost it would have to be a pretty big leak.

Check your gasketts..... My car is making a loud SHHHHHHHHHh sound when the turbo kicks in... I'm still makin 14PSI of boost, but i should be avle to make more with my turbo....... but something aint quite right... I think something is leaking somewhere...

Idle isn't always affected.... when my car was still stock... the damn bolt that goes THROUGH the UIM has worked loose and the car was idling fine... when i sprayed carb cleaner under the UIM... BINGO... died... the damn bolt broke when i tried to tighten it up too....

I realize you said you just put your turbo on. But seriously it doesn't take much to F up a turbo how long does it take you to take off you tid and take a quick look?
But whatever you do Good Luck I hope it is as simply as a loose coupler.

well I checked all the the vac caps and found that one had a slit in it so I replaced with a nice heavy duty one however this was not the problem so I took off my pov and made a gasket for it instead of just using rtv. I'm now waiting for the rtv to dry or cure however you say it and when it's done I will tighten it down all the way and take a drive and post the results both here and in the cai thread.

Just tried got finished with the pov gasket and rtv replacement and that didn't work either. Next I will do like some of you had said and remove the tid to find out if there is anything wrong with the turbo even thought I still don't think thats it because I can actually hear the pressure comming out of something! Grrrrr......

I'm wondering if the pov that came with this intercooler was not working and started working now??? it always starts around 7psi witch they have a 7 to 12lb spring and then a 13 to 18lb racing spring. Hum........ Does anyone have the hks pov???

it's possible it is stuck open, try disassembling it and cleaning the parts adding some WD40 to the slides.

yeah I did disassemble it today to make a gasket for it and to add new rtv. I need an idea how to keep the pov closed so I can see if this is the problem. If I can some how keep it closed and no boost escapes I'll get a higher pressure spring. They come in 5-7psi 7-12psi and 12-18psi so I'm going to get the last one if this is the problem but don't want to spend the money if I don't have to .
