well of course everybody will tell me rebuild. but the thing is thats gonna be at least $2k (rough estimate at rotary power). so im leaning less towards a rebuild now since i see good s4 13b-turbo (j-spec/usdm) for around $1k and i am thinking of that and also buying a new motor from mazda since i might be able to get it discounted. what do u guys recommend? and also i want to know what i have to do to drop in a series 5 turbo motor in my series 4 turbo or how i can get the higher compression/performance of a s5. because i hate the flooding/fuel issues with s4 and i heard thats less of a problem with s5.

a new motor from mazda(still a reman anyways) is still gonna run you well over $2000 even if you can manage a discount.

Jspec motors are cheap but you get what you pay for.. flip a coin and tails means the motor will need to be rebuilt prior to install anyways.

by "reman" u mean remanufactured? i didnt know that so what makes a mazda motor better than getting mine rebuilt? and ya i agree with u on the j-spec motor issue if i were to buy it from someone who never used it. but i was reffering to one previously used with little miles. thanks for the reply Karack

mazda doesn't build brand new 13B or 13BT engines anymore, to piece one together of all new parts you would be looking at about $6-7k for a motor. the ones they sell are remanufactured with some new and some used parts, sometimes you get lucky and get new rotor housings and sometimes not.

the Jspecs shipped from Japan are supposedly "low mileage" but they have been known to be in various conditions and often the mileage is less than low but they generally are good core motors for rebuilds. some people opt to take their chances and throw the engine in and sometimes get lucky and sometimes not. keep in mind those motors have been sitting in wherehouses in Japan for the last decade dry rotting on themselves without having been run in quite some time. the soft seals do not last forever..

All Jpecs say that they have 35k on them. but how do you know how many miles on them unless you pull the motor yourself. Even with a Mazda reman, you aren't getting that great of a deal. Basically, they build you the same motor you got in 87 (or when-ever).

Getting the motor rebuilt by a respected builder is the best way to go. They know what to port and what to by-pass and what to add. And I would stay with the s4 or go RE.

Karack is in CA and I've heard good things about him. 1Revvin7 (Turblown) is building mine.

All I can say is it isn't gonna be cheap to do it correctly. If you are looking for a 1k solution, like Karack said, you get what you pay for.

Check out my rebuilt process in my sig. If you aren't willing to that (minus the coating maybe) then part your car out and by another one.

Sorry to hear about the motor tho.

just run it and beat on it till it really dies if you want to save money
otherwise, pick up another j-spec, heh. you can get two for the price of 1 rebuild.... pretty good chance if you are a gambler

ya im leaning less towards j-spec. but im still interested in a used engine thats been recently used and not sitting in a warehouse for a long time (jspec/usdm w/e) if the price and condition is right. eaither way im saving for a rebuild and if a good deal comes up on an engine ill get that. i wanna get a s5 motor though but what excatly do i need to swap it in??? is it a different tranny?

okay after long hard thought ive decided to work my *** off (since i got 2 jobs now, 50+ hours a week) so like in a month or 2 im getting a rebuild with a street port. anybody know someone experienced that doesnt charge too much? i heard about this place/guy in glendale anybody have a 1st hand experience there because thats the place im lookin to go to when i have the money.

also as soon as i get that done i have a ecu with rtek 2.0 upgrade i wanna put on then bigger injectors (720cc or more) and fuel pump, downpipe, upgraded TID, and i already have exhaust, intake, and emmissions removed. and as far as power to be around 300hp around there. (powerfull but able to be daily driven). anything else i should do to keep it at that level safely? o ya and upgraded turbo (bnr stage 2 or 3) and i wana get it dyno tuned.
