Question Couple n00b questions

Ok, I've owned an 1990 RX7 N/A (GTU?) for about four months now and I have a couple of questions.

1. to set the timing, connect timing light to L1 and line up the yellow mark with the pin? Am I Right?

2. When I first bought the car, I could feel a boosting sensation around 5.5K RPM, it stopped doing that a while ago. Am I supposed to feel a boost like that?

I love this car, and I'm trying to learn everything I can about this engine. This seems like a great community, I hope to be here awhile.

Thanks in advance,
NaTe

The boosting sensation could be attributed to the 5'th and 6'th ports being activated which increases HP and torque, although I thought that usually occurs at slightly lower rpm. If you don't feel it any longer it might be because those ports are not opening when they should.

Check out the following threads or do a search for info on the 5'th and 6'th ports, there is a lot out there:

Yes you are correct, hook the timing light to the leading L-1 lead and make sure the yellow mark on the pulley is aligned with the pointing pin at engine idle.

You can also check the trailing L-1 lead (you'll have to connect the timing light to the trailing L-1 lead) and it will be a red mark on the pulley that you'll have to align with the pointer pin.

Ignore the other two answers to this question. The first points to the wrong part of the intake, and I have no idea what the poster in the 2nd means by "trailing L1" (though the first part of his answer is correct).

Yep. You can use L1 or L2 since they both fire at the same time. But traditionally, L1 is used.

Your VDI may be malfunctioning. Under the upper intake, you will find the VDI valve on the drivers side of the car. It will be round, with a vacuum hose. Make sure the hose is connected, and that the valve moves freely (this is tricky). The Haynes/factory manual will explain all this.

Well I guess that both the 5th and 6th ports and, the VDI aren't working properly. Because I can't feel either of them kick in, that is, if I am suposed to feel both kick in.

I understand that the 5th and 6th ports open at 3800 RPM, but I feel nothing.
And I understand that the VDI opens at 5800 RPM, but again I feel nothing.
I just get the same power all the way up to 8000 RPM.

also there are several little one way valves in the vacuum/air lines, how necessary are these? one of them takes alot of pressure to open and the other isn't one way anymore.
