Couple minor probs with my 91 coupe

Ok. Here's the 3 main issues:

1. The idle sometimes surges between 800-1100 and when it hits 1100, it makes like a puttering sound, then drops back to 800... Doesn't do it all the time, and generally quits when I turn on the A/C... Sometimes it does it with the A/C though....

2. I've had 3 other rx-7's (s4's) and I've noticed a lack of "oomph" from this one. However, this is the smoothest driving one ever. It runs great, just doesn't pull as hard. Could it be my secondaries? Maybe something else? Maybe I just don't feel it as much cause my suspension actually works RIGHT. I'm used to the gear-shift-***-drop most 7s do...

3. When i downshift, it makes a clickety noise (I'm thinking Throwout Bearing) but I've never heard a throwout bearing make that kind of noise.

Overall this car is GOOD. minor dings, good paint, all working accesories (power EVERYTHING) doesn't overheat. I'm happy with my new buy, but I want to protect my investment. I'm getting a tune-up, so I can run this engine until I get my TII swap money, or another reman 13b. It's got 160+k on it, but it runs like it has 60k (except for the "?lack?" of power)..........

1. BAC valve or vac leaks most likely, check the tps for good measure.

2. most likey aux ports, vdi or both. if its just the aux ports that are broken you should feel a slight surge at about 5400 rpm under acceleration, but still generaly week. if its the vdi alone, the car will feel strong up til about 6k rom then just trail off. if both are broke the car will just plain wheeze at anything over 4k rpm. this can be tough to trouble shoot because neither of these powere adders realy changes the sound or smoothness of the engine, but hopefully you can figure it out.

1&2 both have lots of posts in the archive so reead up and good luck.

3. iduno.

Your idle loping could be any number of problems. Have you checked compression? If that's good, it might be the bypass-air valve(i think that's what its called ) that basically helps steady the idle when accessories(ac/lights/etc.) are being used. It also might be the idle isn't properly set, the throttle may be sticking slightly, a vac leak, the thermowax thingie(can't think of a proper term for the warm-up system junk) could be out of whack. As far as the slowness, that could also be a lack of compression, non-functional VDI, non-functioning aux-ports. It's hard to say more specifically without being there.

I found out the TPS isn't working right. The plastic piece that comes out when you apply throttle gets stuck in sometimes.. and the car won't accelerate worth s**t. I have an s5, and I'm not sure of the aux. ports on these. The s4's look different (the grease test). I'm buying the TPS, and I think that'll take care of pretty much everything power related. Now that I read my original post, I realize that I was exagerating. It's probably just my imagination, it still pulls pretty hard. I'm also just gonna run straight pipe (no emissions in Idaho) so no more clogged cats. What size pipe should I get for a single pass-side exit exhaust? 2.75? 2.5? Please comment on that as well... Thank you,

Joel Hager

I have the same issues with my S5 too. Even dies with A.C. on. I'm replacing the TPS because I know its bad. I installed a straight pipe but make sure you get a resonator or else it will be loud. The one I got gave a very nice power boost and is almost as quiet as stock. I kept the stock manifold and y-pipe.
