Could starter be draining my batt?

I went to start the 7 today and the battery was reading 9v well I didnt try to start it and I went instead to investigate what was wrong. Long story short, when I connect everything im reading a constant 12.63v but as soon as I connect the + wire to the starter I drop to 9.32V. Could the started be bad and causing this to happen or is it something bigger?

Sounds like your starter is producing a constant drain. There should not be anything else wired to the starter IIRC. I do not know what that would mean for the starter but maybe swapping it out would help??

Your battery voltage WILL fall from about 12v to about 10 volts when the starter is energized, that's normal...Or are you talking about some other weird thing going on?

It seems that when you plug in the little connector onto the starter and turn the ignition switch the voltage just hits the floor... If you disconnect it and turn the ignition on it stays constant. I was thinking it was the starter but I was thinking mabey it is something in the ignition...

That might be normal- your starter acts like a direct short to ground on your battery the instant it's energized in normal operation. Once it starts to spin, then the amp draw drops back to a "normal" 100 amps or so...

it shouldnt be draining 3 volts whne its not cranking. Hell, even when it IS cranking, voltage drop shouldn't be more than a volt.

I thought he WAS cranking? Now I'm all confused, lol...

Could just be a weak battery too, even if it does read 12v...
