could it be my belt or steering pump about to go !!

so after i have driven my rx7 for about 30mins and i starting turning my car, it starts making these wired noises like of rubber stretching, every time i turn the steering wheel.

i opened the hood and sounded like the belt but im not sure...well i took the pic where the noise was coming from. [see below]

but when i park and turn the wheel you hear it alot its only when you turn.

:scratch

could it be water pump or one of those pulleys..

in this area is where the noise is coming from.

whats that piece called ^

Check your power steering fluid level.. I'm pretty sure you're low.

If it's low, fill it up with ATF [see underhood sticker] and then check it again after driving a while [I'd keep the bottle with you...]

If it's leaking and filling it up only solved temporarily, try some ATF leak stop stuff. Worked for me once

Or you could figure out where it's leaking and replace the parts or hoses.

GoodLuck ^_^

If that doesn't work, check the tension in the belt. It's either loose or worn and needs to be replaced. The FSM also has a slew of items to review.

Part of the power steering unit. Look at the pics in the link provided. Same setup.

Looks like the cold assist device which is used to inject coolant into the engine during cold starts. It didn't work when new from the factory so remove it if need be and plug the hose that connects to it. That simple.

Question # 1)Ah.. what is the tube located right next to the power steering unit that is a tube with the words "open" and "front" on it?

Question #2)Looks like the cold assist device which is used to inject coolant into the engine during cold starts. It didn't work when new from the factory so remove it if need be and plug the hose that connects to it. That simple.

I would think he would have gotten the power steering BEEP warning if the fluid was low?

It could be the tensioner, the bearing can go bad but it usually gives less drastic audible warning first.

If the fluid IS low you have a problem somewhere, on my convertible the cooling tube for the power steering rotted out, instead of dicking around with it I put a hose clamp a piece of hose over the hole, it held for over 10 years before I decided to replace it with another hose clamp and piece of hose, everything else it connected to looked so corroded I did not want to mess with it.

OR maybe the whole belt is just loose, did you check the belt?

BTW- that black piece that says OPEN/FRONT, that is the powersteering dipstick, turn it and pull it out and check it, usually when the car is warmed up, that is also where you put more fluid.

For Rob XX 7 I have a 88 Vert and my power steering light or buzzer never came on and I have a hole in my bottom hose. Not starting any thing just saying some of the buzzers dont work like there suppose to. So like said before by others check to see if there a leak. The age of our cars it's a surprise they held up this long e=with some of the things that work on them.

Press on the belt in between the adjustment pulley and the water pump pulley. If you can press down more than 5/8 of an inch it is loose.hell it LOOKS loose to me!
the empty container is teh bottle for the cold start assist system.,If you put some 50/50 antifreeze in it,.call it a day,.(even if you are in hot climate,..unless you wanna remove all that junk).

he has been under the hood, if its leaking in front of the car it makes a mess of things when it gets sucked in with the fan, one would hope he can tell that he has a bad leak from the fluid all over the engine compartment or under the car/in his driveway.

I had a similar noise and it turned out to be the bolt holding the tension pulley had loosened letting the pulley move slightly. I tightened it and the noise went away.

if your belt is loose buy a new one, be sure to loosen the large nut in the middle of the tensioner before you try to loosen the smaller adjustment bolt, if you do not you will snap it.

its two belts i gotta get right.

haven't looked under the hood yet been quick busy with school but this weekend im check it out. it should be hard to replace if its just release the tension-er , remove the old belt , follow the belt pattern with the new one and that's it ?!

Not only do you have to release the long tension bolt but also loosen the bolt holding the pulley to the bracket. Then, yes it is a quick remove and replace. Easier if you have an e-fan setup.
