Cost of DIY rebuild?
Cost of DIY rebuild?
I plan on rebuilding and porting a lost compression 13BT, for my T2. Aside from the porting templates, and how to video, what are the parts and costs I am looking at? This is assuming that one rotor and housing is usable, and please dont include the cost of replacing the housing I will need, as I will prolly find one used on parts trader. Can I reuse the unblown apex/side seels? Thanx guys
Why would you want to use the same seals? If your gonna rebuild, get some 2mm seals from Hurley engineering...peace of mind! Think about it...that would be like reusing a piston ring on a piston rebuild.

You can reuse corner seals, side seals, and ALL teh springs, if you feel so inclined. Apex seals and oil seals are a must. You can reuse the metal oil carrier ring, but must replace the rubber o-ring inside. You must also replace the rubber corner seal plugs.
IT is cheap enough you should go ahead with FD corner seal springs and new side seal springs, Oil seal springs arent a bad idea either, but theyre usually reuseable. Apex seal springs do not wear down from new, in my measurements of over 20 core motors.
Rotor and main bearings are always ok to reuse unless theyre showing brass. All internal o-rings MUST be replaced...the external gaskets are sometimes reuseable, depending on how you are at removing manifolds. I always get teh appropriate gasket kit anyway, which comes with all teh o-rings AND gaskets for the entire engine. For a t2 it will run around $250-300. Apex seals $225-250, CS plugs $20, oil seals $100, oil pellet(e-shaft) $15, FD corner springs $30, sideseal springs $30. Prices are approximate depending on where you buy from. Atkins offers very good pricing and good products, I use those in my rebuilds.

How much miles on the engine?  Anything approaching 100k miles I would recommend to replace the apex seal.  As hypntyz7 has already mentioned, on a budget rebuild, you ca reuse almost everything else.
Typical "seal kit" price is almost a grand.
Typical gasket kit price is about $300.
I would highly recommend to change the fuel injector o-rings and (upper/lower) grommets.  This is another $100.
If you happen to break one of the oil injector lines, it's bout $20/each.  I'd be surprised if you can salvage them.
If the oil injectors don't pass the one-way blow test, it's another $30/each.

Its amazing how the cost adds up. I am installing a new Pineapple Racing Engine. and the cost of other stuff is multiplying rapidly. Oil Cooler Flush, oil cooler lines, pulsation dampers, hoses, lines pilot bearings, coolant, oil, gear lube, mounts. etc. etc. This doesn't count the cost of the nice to have mods.
