CorkSport 99Spec Rear Brake Upgrade

It's almost here, the CorkSport 99Spec Rear Brake Upgrade! We did a test fit on my car last night and everything went well. The only thing we are waiting on before the kits are for sale is more rotors. Soon as they are available for sale I'll update the thread and let you guys know. They are setup on my car running a 17x9 wheel in the back. It had plenty of room all around so you guys with 16s out back shouldn't have any clearance issues. It does require some modification to the stock hub though. You have to remove a little less than 1/4" of material off each point of the star as the inside of the new rotor is a bit smaller than the stock one. (If you've seen your hubs, you know what I'm talking about)

It's quite a large increase in size too. The 99Spec is a 12.5" rotor, that's two inches larger in diameter than the stock rear rotor, you can imagine how much more braking surface that is on each turn of the rotor. It uses the stock single piston rear caliper so you don't have to buy a lot of expensive hardware to use the larger rotor. The kit should retail right around $340 assuming everything pans out the way we want it to, and should be available for sale within the next month or so.

I'll keep you all posted with any new information I have.

I question why you would need more rear brakes?
Why would you want larger rotors in the rear?
The rears only do maybe 20% to 25% of the braking force, and having too much brake in the rear can cause dangerous oversteering under braking.

For the answer to those I'd ask Fujita Engineering, they did it first and had great results without detrimental side effects.

I could see wanting them if you upgraded your fronts and are trying to balance things out...

What's included? I assume a bracket to relocate the caliper?

Here's a question, why does nobody make a kit to relocate your front calipers and use bigger rotors? That's where an upgrade would do the most good.

do it for the fronts and you'd have a cash cow. like the others mention; as cool as they are, i just dont see a need for having rear rotors bigger than my fronts!

FEED also makes big brake front upgrades......

I can see this because it keeps stock e-brake as a good for a race type front brake, or are they doing 99 spec fronts too? thatd be very cool

I thought I remember seeing someone here on the forum was using a larger much cheaper brake kit from a eclipse? I am not sure how hard it would be to fabricate a new bracket. I guess it would just take having the brake kit in your hands and throwing it on the getting out the welder.

This would probably be better for the drifters, but anything else would be crazy.

The ebrake benefit is one of them, but FEED did most of their testing without a front upgrade. This isn't going to be increasing braking power, just leverage. You have to remember that you aren't increasing the amount of clamping force or the amount of friction. You're just giving the rotor more room to brake on each revolution. The amount of performance gap between then 4 piston caliper up front and the small single piston caliper out back more than negates the small amount of brake bias you might run into.

But just because you are all so worried, yes, we are also working on a good way to upgrade the fronts to accept a larger rotor.

Included are all the brackets and hardware to relocate the caliper and the larger rotors.

We are also working on a way to get the larger front rotors from the 99spec, but are still early in the process.

Cool. Now, for people like me, this is a big issue: What is pricing and availability like on replacement rotors? I have a habit of destroying them at the track.

FWIW: More braking leverage = more braking power. With bigger rotors and everything else unchanged, the calipers have more torque on the rotors, which means they will lock the tires easier.

What the hell does "remove some metal on the points of the star" Mean....

you talkin about grinding the outer edges of the hub itself down where the rotor hat fits over it

I have found numerous upgrades for the front, but none for the rear, so this would be a perfect mod for someone who has already bought a big brake kit for their car or just bigger rotors up front. Me on the other hand...I'm a poor **** so upgrading the brakes is out of the question If I had the cash I'd get a big brake kit and throw these on the rear..sounds like an awsome combo.

Well, good news! The kit is done and for sale now.

We are well into development of the front kit but that one is being a bit more trouble than the rears were. I'll keep you all updated when I know more.

Also, I saw a question up there about the price of replacement rotors and if you buy the kit from us and need new rotors later we'll cut you a bit of a deal. They end up being about $128 a piece. We're looking for a high quality aftermarket rotor to use instead of the price-bloated mazda oem ones but at the moment the ones we have found are... less than quality...

I think another good incentive would be to offer D.O.T. legal stainless brake lines at a slightly discounted rate for those who purchase the brake upgrade.

Ok, sounds good. $10 off the CorkSport stainless braided lines for the FC when you buy them with the brake kit.

Yeah, same here... once I finish my engine I'll definitely go for one of these kits... probably in about a month or so.
