I was telling my supervisor about my RX-7s I'm fixing up.
He: "Those have the rotary engine, right?"
Me: Right.
He: "How many cylinders do they have?"
Me: None. Two rotors.
He: "It's like an airplane engine right?"
Me: No, but they ARE used in some home-built airplanes.
He: "How does it work then?"
Me: Well, it has two triangle shaped thingamabobs that go roundy-round in an oval shaped housing.
He: [lengthy pause]"Right......so is it overhead cam?"
Me: [short pause]......Right.

The guy is a amateur gearhead with a classic '70 GTO 455HO and 4spd.....but ignorant as hell about a lot of things. For some reason I now must make it my mission in life to explain the rotary engine to the ignorant masses. I guess I've caught the fever now, even though I've not had a running RX since my RX-3 back in '76-'77.

Happy rotoring,

i like those plates ideas...except i think the first one at a glance reads more like piston fire which is probably what some people might think. I really like 1PT3LTR and 0PISTNS

Damn...I wish they would give us 8-10 letters instead of 7. There were a couple that were taken such as "NOPSTNS" "REPOWER".

On my reg. papers for my 80 and 85, it says Number of Cylinders : 0
On my 88 vert it says number of cylinders : 2

So I guess I got a 2 banger, or a no banger LOL

Funny than this is when you take your housings to a local machine shop to get them milled, they look at you like you brought them something from the alien spacecraft on independence day LOL I love it LOL

Funnier yet is when you get some guy who has modded the hell out of his boinger, then STILL doesn't know about rotaries. I had some guy SWEAR to me that at least some 7's came with a V6 as on option. After about 5 minutes of trying to explain to him, I gave up.

"What we have here is... failure to communicate. Some people, you just can't reach..." (what movie was that from anyway?)

Every time I've registered or gotten a loan fro one of my 7's, it's always been listed as a 4 cylinder. Hell, I think even State Farm has it listed as such.

I think we all need rotary key chains. Like ones that look like the housing with a moveable rotor so we can explain to people how it works. Its like my buddy has a Jetta VR6 and he has trouble explaining to people that its not really a V6 but its not exactly an inline either. He got this keychain that looks like his headgasket so he can show people how the pistons are setup. It really helps the big block guys get it

Glad I'm not the only one this all happens to.

Woman at E-check: How many cylinders?
Me: None.
W: No, really.
M: None. It's a Wankel rotary engine.
W: (exasperated) How many plugs does it have?
M: Just type in "two" 'cos it's a two rotor.

Or my favorite...

Guy: Hey, isn't that a rotary motor?
Me: Yep, it's an RX-7.
G: Wow... so when did they stop making them?
M: They're still in production, they just don't sell them in the US anymore because the cars they put them in got too expensive to be popular.
G: So I hear they're unreliable too...
M: Yeah, I put 3k a month on the car plus drag racing twice a week and never have to do anything but keep oil and gas in it...

But there are some cool people out there, who are genuinely curious without having anti-normal prejudices. Thanks to this thread, I know what license plate I'm gonna get for the new car. "NO BOING"

I didn't know that my RX-7 had a rotary engine when I bought it three years ago. I thank the car gods daily for siezing the right front brake caliper when I went to buy an '87 Scirocco. I saw the '86 RX-7 parked in another area and put my $4k on it instead.

...you thought that was bad? I then proceded to bring my wierd rotary car to Mazda for a $600 tune-up.

I like to think I'm alot smarter now.

Great thread, you guys are crackin' me up!

Add to all of this that the Honda guy always comments on how it's not really 1.3 liters, actually more like 3.9 liters cause' it fires 3 times per rotor per revolution and that's why I beat his Civic Si

But seriously, I really do miss adjusting valves, and worrying about IF it is time to change the timming belt yet!

Hey Chris-

That's the same lady that was there when I got my tags. I never talked to her at all (I think she may have given a friendly hello), but did see here none the less. She did seem pretty nice, but I probably wouldn't expect her to know too much about our cars. Even my own friends are ignorant although not totally stupid about how my car works.
