Cooling system: No fan or thermostat

Allright, so my car started getting a bit hot about a week ago so i took out the thermostat right away. After i did that it would take a long time (about 15 min - never) to get to normal operating temp. BUT sometimes it would go slightly over normal operatin temp. Then i noticed that my stock clutch fan was blowing nothing so i took it off. So this weekend after i took it off i drilled holes in the front of it, poured out the liquid and poured in epoxy resin. I have not put it back in yet and so far my car only goes above normal operatin temp. when i'm stuck in traffic, i noticed that this can be counteracted by puting the heater at full blast. So i was wondering what would happen if i put a thermostat back in, would it overheat because of the lack of fan and the extra thermostat restrection? or would it be the same as it is now but get up to normal opp. temp. quicker and stay there. Also when i'm driving at highway speeds (above 60) with no fan or thermostat, the temp drops quite a bit below normal. Also is it bad to run with a fan that's "stuck" together and alwas on and revs as high as the engine? how much will that effect top end power, if any?

Notes: S5, N/A, Daily driving into downtown houston.

I never knew the stock S5 temp gauge could do what you just described. I would get an aftermarket gauge, then start diagnosing it.

Note: Philip, I have a couple of extra fans laying around. You wanna try one???

sure, but yeah the temp gauge seems pretty sensitive

p.s. the other night when it was really cold (for houston) i got the temp gauge to peg the bottom while doing 80 down the intersate... weird, i turned the heater to full blast sucking outside air and set the crusie controll and watched the gauge fall.

I'm surprised you even risk driving it with no fan. Get a stock fan that operates properly. If it's locked solid, it will be difficult for your engine to spin it above a certain rpm (I forget). Get a new thermostat from Mazda, install it. By definition, a thermostat helps regulate the temperature.

Weird...mine would warm up as normal (S5 Vert) then stay at normal temp no matter how I drove it.

I am not one of them, but there are members that will vouch that the S5 temp gauge has only 3 settings: cold, normal, fried motor. Maybe someone else can chime in.

idk man, the fan seems to only be about 5% important to my car lol. if you only drive fast it seems to stay way cool

the fan& the fan shroud, is responcible for keeping it kool while idling in trafic or at speeds below 20 mph.

Yup S5 temp guage has basically 3 settings, cold, normal operating temp, and too late. If you start to see your temp guage move up from normal operating temp pull over and kill the engine asap.

Here in Chicago in freezing temps at night going 80 on the highway I get my temps down to 180. In houston I highly doubt your getting anywhere near that low temp.

Philiptompkins, get an aftermarket guage it will give you a much better idea of what your temp really is, you will be glad you got one too. The stock s5 temp guage starts to move off normal operating temp and go up to "your fucked" around 220 degrees I think. I'm sure someone else will know that though.

Get that fan on ASAP. I can't believe your driving around without one.

Are you sure your car is an s5? Your temp guage sure doesn't act like it.

3/4 way up??? On an S5??? Mine never went over half, which is the "normal" setting. You could have a goofy gauge, either way, an aftermarket one seems to be the last piece to your puzzle.

put an OEM tstat back in and get a working clutch fan. without the tstat to restrict the flow the water will not stay in the rad long enough to cool not to mention with a freaking fan.

Sorry to hear about your problems there Phil

My Temp gauge never worked since day one. Replaced the sensor and everything but the gauge itself!

Kinda scary driving around knowing the only thing telling me if I'm overheating is steam blowing out the top of my hood... But then again I haven't lost any coolant from overflow and pressure's been fine so I'm not too too worried.. Just slightly. lol

yeah, after all this i'm not so sure about my stock gauge any more. but i can seem to tell if the engine is too hot by how its running. When it gets hotter than normal it idels really rough and dies a lot; is this normal? Also as i got scared of overheating ect. I put my now clutchless-fan back in tonight. man that thing sounds mean with that fan noise at 6k rpm. But yeah i'm probly gunna get a thermostat soon because after i drove it for about a half hour with the solid fan clutch the thermo gause only came about 2mm of the bottom oh well, i'll prolby get an electric fan. Which brings me to my next question: How do you wire an aftermarket thermo gauge? do i need another sending unit somewhere? and how do i wire and electric fan to come on at a certain temp? or is it best to put a switch, i'm just worried about when my sister borrows my car and forgets to turn the fan on.

allright, I don't know if anyone cares but I have a new (ghetto) setup so I figured i'd post the results. Ok so it was fairly warm this morning in houston (in the high 60's maybe) and traffic sucked. I spent about 45 mins in stop and go traffic with no thermostat and a un-clutched fan. The temp gauge never went above 1/8th of the way up (supposed to sit at 1/2 way) and damn that fan sounded good! It sounded like a jet aircraft on takeoff above 4K rpm woo hoo! I think i never reved it past like 5k this morning (the engine never got close to normal opp. temp.) but i wonder if the plastic fan will fly apart? or will the belt just slip? i dunno... well i'll get a thermostat soon and leave the fan like it is for now.
