Cooling Problem Diagnosis Thread

The big fat rx7 cooling thread

Intro: I am not a mechanic or particularly experienced. I however have read a lot about cooling problem with the rx7 fc3s. As my car ran hot for a month or 2. I also saw the cooling thread for the 3rd gen which gave me this idea. I was frustrated hunting around for information trying to diagnose my problem that is the second reason I made this thread. Any criticism is welcome and encouraged. I would hate to distribute false information.

Gauges- the stock s4 gauge is linear while the s5 gauge is weighted
-s4 gauge
-The s4 should be running at ¼ of the way up the gauge at normal operating temperature.
-1/4 up the s4 gauge is about 180F
-1/2 up is about 200F
-3/4 is about 220F
-these points are just reference don't rely on them and an aftermarket temperature gauge is a great investment

-s5 gauge
-The s5 gauge should be running ½ way up the gauge
-If the gauge moves towards hot at all pull over immediately chances are its been running way to hot for way to long
-An aftermarket temperature gauge is a necessity with the s5

Tips
-To see if the thermostat is really stuck shut grab the top hose after the car has warmed up, if its cool then your thermostat is stuck closed
-Replace the hoses!
-You can have the radiator flow checked to see if that the problem
-do the checks to make sure you haven't blown a water seal first, a lot of people on this sight will assume you have a blown water jacket if you post an overheating thread, doing the tests before hand will prevent you from wasting peoples time.

This is just supposed to be a set of links to various sights and thread I found helpful. I take no credit for the information, but since a lot of people having cooling problem I wanted to make a place with some links. If you have anything to add please post up.
