Coolant Question....How Do You Figure Out The Ratio of H20 to Coolant?

Evil Aviator: Sorry, I was thinking of the wrong car. 50/50 is recommended for the DeLorean. For the RX-7, follow the manual. Just a lack of proper brain function on my part.

FreedS4: Sorry, that's wrong. It's true that pure water does cool a lot better, but you will find that most tracks do not allow glycol based coolant because it is too slippery in the event of a spill.

Actually seeing as how I work at a local track, Waterford Hills, and I crew for a guy that races an RX-7, there is no rule on running coolant, in fact just this weekend the guy's 7 I crew for was running hot as hell so we took out all the coolant that was in it and put straight water and his temps dropped drastically. So the reason they do run all water with the occasional water wetter is to run cooler. But I don't want to get into a fight over it, because quite possibly the reason why some people don't run coolant at race tracks is that it's not allowed, but from my experiences it's that it helps the motor run cooler. Sorry it had to be so long.

Maybe at some tracks it's different? I doubt there is a coolant rule for "street" cars, but for many "pro" events around here there are rules against glycol based coolant... *shrug*

Agreed, I'm not saying it'll benefit a street car, I'm just saying that at a track where cars are never under 7k, they start to look for the best colling agent and that is water with water wetter. No hard feelings.

This is from the 1997 Mazda Competition Parts Catalog Tech Tips section(page TT-27) and I quote:

"We recommend using a 90% water to 10% glycol mix. Water has superior heat transfer properties(2 1/2 times better) than glycol-based coolant products. Using distilled or purified water will reduce scale build-up.

It's important to remember to change back to a 50/50 water/glycol mix when storing the car, especially if you live in severe winter climates."

I was waiting for someone to quote that. It is a rule that I have been using for quite some time.

In regards to those other comments on track requirements...during RACING events, it is a requirment NOT to use coolant. Which is a standard at ALL race tracks. It is posted on the board, and on the liablity form that you sign.

During my motorcycle track dayz. Coolant is fine, they are not strict about it. But, when racing, coolant is outlawed.
