coolant flush

My heater doesn't work very well, and I'm thinking that it's just clogged. How is the best way to flush out the coolant? Buy one of those coolant flush things or just run water through for a while?

The last time I did it I ran some coolant flush additive stuff through it for a while... and then I ran a lot of water though it until it started coming out of the engine clear.
