coolant burning problem

Last night I drove my buddy home from my house, got home and turned the car off and noticed smoke coming from the hood... I popped it and it was the coolant, the steam was coming out of the cap that's between the fan shroud and the battery, and I checked the level and it was low... but I knew it had been good earlier that day. I checked my temp gauge in my car and it was normal. Idk why the coolant started to burn/steam. Any ideas? Thanks

try replacing the pressure cap, coolant should never be pushing outside of the pressure cap, if it was overpressurizing it would simply push coolant into the overflow bottle. also while replacing the cap, make sure the line going to the overflow bottle is unrestricted by blowing through it with compressed air.
