coolant on block.. not hoses.. searched
1987 N/A
ive searched an read an read an searched an replaced an retried etc etc.. heres my problem...
was leaking coolant .. replaced obvious hoses etc. traced problem under UIM.
removed UIM.. replaced that nasty coolant line that goes from the block to TB.. etc.. cleaned up the block and.. presto, still coolant pooling on the engine block, passenger side at the rear beside the primary injectors.
i keep searching an it seems that remedies go from replace hoses, the nipple leaking and o rings in the LIM. the o ring issue seems debated as to thier existance at all in N/A engines as far a i can tell.
this puddle is appearing with the car off, the UIM removed. there is absolutely no place that it can be coming from above, so it has to be coming from below. is there a gasket down there that may have failed or am i looking at a shot engine?

i thnk i know which one is the hose check behind the engine i mean right behind the intake part that says 13b fuel injection is hard to reach with out removing the intake mann so better do when the car get at temperature it starts leaking

let me clarify. there is nothing at all above my engine block.. the upper intake an throttle body have been removedthe injectors have been removed, the primary fuel rail has been removed, the vaccuum hose spider has been removed. there is NOTHING above my engine, the closest and only possible hose that could be leaking is the block to TB one at the back, i have already replaced, reclamped and checked it, there is no coolant leaking from the hose.
the only two places it can be as far as i can tell is either leaking from where the lower intake manifold meets the engine block, or the engine itself is leaking.
the main thing i want to know is simply, is there coolant moving between the lower manifold an the engine? if so that could be my problem and solution (new gasket). If there isnt any coolant moving through there then it has to be coming from between my rear iron and rear rotor housing, or a cracked housing., i see no cracks, and all looks tight.
coolant is continuing to pool as the level in the radiator is higher then the engine block. this is the only source of pressure and is sufficient to create a puddle on top of my engine between the primary injectors and the 4 holes that make up the lower intake.

check coolant O rings. They go between the LIM and the block and if they are worn you will get coolant build up in the little valleys that are between the LIM and the block
When i was putting my new engine together i had one that was worn and as i started to fill the radiator with coolant when the radiator started to get full i would get coolant build up in those little valleys. And if you change those change the LIM gasket while your at it.
i keep reading about the o rings but it all seems to pertain to turbo engines.. mines N/A, also something i read but wasnt clear on was the LIM gasket, which is metal layers as far as i can tell, but im not sure if thats correct for a S4 N/A or not, was left scratchin my head. i suppose ill take the LIM off in any case as there isnt much worse i can do to it at this point, its not like its gettin me anywhere in its current state

First gen RX had two on the intake manifold. JM85RX7 most likely had one of those at one time or the other. I know I had a 82 n/a and it had two. Nope, my 86 n/a has no water passages b/t the engine and the intake manifold and no 0'rings.
there is nothing more to tear off, its all torn off but the LIM... there is no question as to where the leak originates.. in the rear passenger corner on top of the engine block where it meets the LIM. the puddle is in the recesses between the primary fuel rail an the LIM, starting from the rear. if there are no O rings or coolant passages in the LIM on an N/A then there is little question that i am looking at a rebuild/new engine, correct?
the reason i ask instead of just goin an looking is because i work 6 days a week and have already wasted about 8 sundays getting to this point, i dont want to waste another taking off the LIM to find that its not even possible that its the problem when i could spend that sunday pullin the engine.

well, if its collecting on top of the engine, i SERIOUSLY doubt its coming from the engine. it wouldn't just push through like that, it would leak down. maybe you can take pictures so i can understand better? ive never seen an outer coolant seal fail and leak out the block, but its possible.
