Cool Convertible top won't work, 1990

convertible top just stopped going down.

The top is currently closed. The button makes 'noise' when pushing it in the close position but the top doesn't move. The button does NOT make noise when pushed in the 'open position'..that is..to take the top down.

Would a blown fuse have this type of effect?

By "noise" do you mean beeping? It seems to me that if there was a blown fuse there would be no beeping at all. I'm not completely positive however. And It may simply be a matter of cleaning the motors for the top. I had to do that on mine, and it definitely made a difference. My problem now is the switch itself is bad and I need to re-solder the wiring in there. For more information look in the FSM...it tells you how to manually raise and lower the top in emergencies, as well as how to test the motors and the switch using a multimeter. Hope this is somewhat helpful!

BTW...if you don't have an FSM, get one here: RX7 City

It'll be your best friend . The info about the top is in the body section.

Sounds like it could be the switch. Mine is starting to go too and it sucks. Also, make sure that the parking break is up. If it's not, the top wont move, but will make a beeping noise. If it wont work still, then you can lower it manually atleast.

Mines been flakey a couple of times in the last year. Once when it was up, the other down. Would get the beeping but no movement. First time I did the manual thing and it worked fine after that. The last time just kept trying it everytime I got in the car and it started working again after a couple of days.

It's the switch, take it apart, clean it, and it will scare you at how fast it goes up and down. A little contact cleaner and some 800 grit sandpaper, or emory cloth, and enjoy.

I have a nearly brand-new-from-dealer switch if you need it. I replaced mine and then went manual a month later.

Don't know about the noise...

But my ignition switch has been bad for the past 50K miles. When the switch is in the on position, the wipers, interior fan, and top do not always work. Just a jiggle of the keys and all is OK. So far that it he only symptom of the bad ignition so I don't sweat it.
