Convertible headrest speakers

Can anyone tell me how to get to the headrest speakers in my 1991 Convertible? I want to upgrade but cannot find anything on how to remove the covers and replace the speakers. Also-any suggestions on door and Headrest replacement speakers? Appreciate any help.

My vert had the seats gutted when I got it, so now I am sporting grey/black seats out of a gtu in their place.

But a pair of 5 1/4 pioneers will fit nicely in the doors.

Failing replacing the headrest speakers, you can fit up to four 6x9 's in the front of the spare cover just aft of the seats (if you remove the air deflector) if the lack of bottom end on the stock stereo bugs you.

Notice the zipper on the bottom of the headrest?

Circuit City did mine... awesome job. Put 3-1/2s in, and the headrests are now the rear, I think 6-1/2s in the doors and 5-1/2s in the dash. Headrest control no longer works but the sound is great.... much louder than before and no longer have to turn them on and turn them up after starting car every time.

ok...after you unzip the sides...you will need a set of needle nose pliers...once you unzip and take a look inside you will notice some bronze colored metal...those are rings that fasten the leather to the frame..i dont remember exactly how many there are..but 3-6 no more or less... once you get those things out..its ready to come off.

a huge word of caution before you do this.....if your leather is oem..then it is going to be a little brittle( not trying to rhyme) the problem i ran into the first time was that the factory leather is so old, shrunken, and fitted so tight..that you feel like its not gonna come off..basically if you can get it as soft as possible and then dont be impatient or aggressive with it...it will take alot of time to slowly inch it off...more like millimeters! you have to be careful not to tear it cuz it will tear quick..also be careful not to stress the leather cuz you will get some cracking on the visible exterior..maybe warm it up some to get the leather to stretch...it is a simple job but with the combination of perforated holes for the speakers and the very old brittle leather...you stand a good chance of tearing it..i did my first time, on my drivers seat..but i get the passenger side off cleanly. also to get the whole thing out you need a phillips head screwdriver...one screw attaches the unit to the seat......all i can say to recap..is that your original leather has seen alot of sun over the years and will ripp extremely easy..you need to be VERY CAREFUL to prevent damage to the leather. if you need more help you can pm me ill do what i can for you....good luck
