Is this Convertible a good buy?

The coupe I went to look at today was sold an hour before I got there ... however he had two other RX7s for sale. For $4000 1988 Convertible 5 speed, 118,000 miles with a possibly rebuilt engine (markings on pieces of the engine lead the current owner to believe it has been rebuilt) the interior is in excellent condition as well as the top.

Or for $2800 an '88 Automatic with 90,000 miles that needs a paint job, but has an excellent interior inlcuding some nice leather seats.

Which is the better buy?

Edit: I plan on getting the car(s) checked out by Rotary Performance in Garland before purchase.

Well cut the auto one. No point in an rx7 that is an auto IMO. About the vert, its all up to you. If you want a vert and its in great shape then its a good deal to you. Things you might want to think about is that the engine could go at any time now and that the verts are the heaviest of the FCs. If you decide you want the car then definitely go get a compression test done before buying it.

88 vert is good if you can verify it's a new engine. Otherwise go find an 89+ vert as it has more hp + torque.

I think the 90 non airbag stickshift is the best of the verts as it has better gearing & is a bit lighterweight than the 91 vert.

I can concur after driving vaughnc's vert last night
Although I dont think 4000 is bad for an 88 with a new engine and excellent top.
