Convertible Fuel Filter replacement help needed

Ok, I'm using the trusty Haynes manual to swap out the fuel filter on my 90 convertible. It states that the fuel pump connector is on the left shock tower and to remove the rear carpet etc to get to it. I've done searches and can't find anything on here pertaining specifically to replacement on the vert. My question is does anyone know for sure the fuel pump connector is located in the same place as the coupes ? ... I'm having a hell of a time getting access to the left rear shock tower on the vert and really don't want to tear it up if it's located elsewhere. I need to make sure I relieve the pressure on the fuel lines before going any further...

dude it is in the engine bay, under the trailing coil, steering rack and stuff. follow the fuel lines to tada the fuel filter. Left FRONT shocktower. Jack the car up and pull it off.

filter is in the engine bay, the sock is in the tank. I have no idea how to get to the tank in a vert.

The fuel pump connector is located in the same spot as the coupe.. lift up the carpet in the trunk.. and youll see the little plate that covers the fuel pump.. the wiring harness feeds thru there and into the same location as the coupes. Youll have to take out the back interior spare tire cover to get to it though.

No Idea Why you want to disconnect the Fuel Pump..Unless you are God-Damn-Houdini,you are gonna get some fuel on you anyhow!~..get the car raised up good and Solid,go under the Drivers side and Take the Filter off,from the lower Driver's firewall.(2x10mm nuts),then be prepared to Swap the filter out after you Relieve the pressure AT the filter.Slide the clamps ahead enough so that you can get the Filter off,and Replace QUICKLY!..Have some Rags around to absorb the Fuel,and For God's Sake,Stay away from your Neighbour's Barbeque!..Good Luck!

The connector is in the trunk on the left hand side. It's behind a plastic panel, and goes down to the plate where the fuel tank is. The fuel filter likes to be a ***** and is a PITA to get to and take off, but it's just a lot of sticking you hand up there and going "wtf, why won't it come out." Do what he said ^. It's on the driver side shock tower, below the master cylinder. It's easier to get to it with the car jacked up, and you can reach up into it.

i had no problem at all getting mine off from the top of the engine bay.. few extensions and your good..

Thanks for the responses. Just to clarify, I know where the fuel filter itself is. The question was the fuel pump connector location in order to relieve pressure to the fuel line. The fuel pump and the connecting lines were easy enough to find in the trunk, but I can't seem to easly get access to the rear tower. So if it's there I guess I'm just going to skip that step.

If the engine has not been run in the last few hours, skip that part of the fsm. The pressure in the rail will deplete after a few hours down to zip.

My vert's an S4, but the connector for the fuel pump is located behind the forward trim piece (the one that spans the length of the trunk), on the drivers side, on top. You need to pop out 2 or 3 little connectors, but after doing that you should be able to get your hand in there to unplug it

Well that was relatively painless, though time consuming... Got the fuel filter replaced and there was very little pressure in the fuel line after sitting overnight. The worst part I think was accessing that fuel filter from down below. That was a beotch! Had to cut off the upper fuel line from the filter to the motor in order to remove the filter, but it was easily replaced and the RX started up after only a couple cranks... Whew !!!... Next project !....

The 'vert's fuel pump connector located not in the same spot as the coupe and it's not accessible from the interior. As mentioned above you need to remove the trunk's front trim.

But like Hailers said, unless the engine has been running recently, relieving the fuel pressure is not generally necessary. If the engine has just been running, definitely do it. 20psi (typical residual pressure after shut-down) will send fuel a long way. Or a long way into your eyes... I do recommend the fuel cap be removed though, as the small amount of pressure that's sometimes present in the fuel tank will keep pushing fuel out the hard line, which is annoying.

From that it sounds like you didn't use the fuel pump check connector to re-pressurise the fuel system before starting the engine. This is a good habit to get into. Any time you disconnect a fuel line you should pressurise the system to check for leaks before starting the engine. It's not so critical in this case as the lines are visible and accessible with the engine running, but for fuel lines on the engine for example this is much more important. As a small bonus the engine will start normally rather than waiting for the fuel lines to be refilled and pressurised while cranking.

Hmm.. Do you mean to tell me I was dreaming when I accessed mine from the interior taking off the spare tire cover? Or maybe I have the illusion of my vert being a coupe? I dont know. But the car below IS a convertible correct?

I should have mentioned that I did try to relieve some pressure first (if there was any left) by opening up the fuel cap ( as NZConvertible mentioned) . It sat overnight and I made sure I had the safety goggles on... Just in case.. AND a towel and bucket ! My biggest concern was how it would restart without repressurizing the fuel system. Suprisingly it cranked within just a few cranks. The only reason I was concerned about finding the fuel pump connector was that the Haynes manual speficially mentioned relieving the pressure. I couldn't get the *#@! trunk panel removed without fear of breaking the connectors.

I used to follow the Haynes manual and FSM step by step but know better now. This is one of those jobs that could use the tips mentioned to simplify it quite a bit, but not everyone may want to let the system depressurize by waiting. On my coupe, the biggest hassle was getting to the fuel pump connector and trying not to break clips and stuff. A lot of other jobs can be done safely by taking reasonable shortcuts.

I think both the Haynes and FSM say that to minimise risk. The Haynes has to assume an inexperienced mechanic is doing the work, and the FSM has to assume the car's just been driven into the workshop.
