Does it beep at all when you do this? Did you unlatch the header latches before trying to lower the top? Is the car in neutral with the parking brake up? Your question is a bit unclear at the end there...

Then I would guess the switch is bad- waiting for Icemark to confirm.

He is a mod on the forum who rebuilds a lot of the sketchy electricals on these cars, and has amassed some knowledge about stuff like this.

I had a similar problem where my switch stopped responding while I was putting the top up. So in mid-up my top simply stops. I could put it back down, but it wouldn't go up. I tried taking the key out of the ignition, ran around the car counterclockwise 3 times, performed several tantric rituals, threatened the car with a voddoo curse.

The top eventually decided to go up...I think it was the tantric rituals that did the trick. Next chance I got I swapped a spare switch.

sounds like a bad switch. If you really want to put the top up and down for the time being, you can go to the vert top motors and put them in "neutral mode" by using a screwdriver.

that will get you to pimp topless while you get the switch repaired or replaced.

I'm trying to do this right now. What exactly do you mean when you say this?

I dont now about the '88s but my 91 has a "test" connector in the engine bay. I think you can even use it to move the top.
