conversion project

first off i have an 87 gxl and i will be doin a s5 turbo 11 conversion and i was wondering what else i need to get this engine in and running heres what i have:
91 turbo11 engine
turbo trans cluth flywheel pressure plate
n333 ecu
t11 coils
knock box
fuel pump
s4 front cover

and im also a little confused about how im going to wire this up being an s4 -> s5 turbo

i appreciate it greatly

thanx but ive already read that about 50 billion times while it is very good it does not go into detail about the s4 ->s5 conversion it says basically that the wiring doesnt match and to switch out tps fuel injectors & wiring water thermo sensor ect. ect. ect. <-- what goes there?

The coils are the same... no need to change them.

Going with a later gen engine will be a wiring problem, and need all sorts of custom work.

What might be your best bet is to use a S4 T2 engine harness, as that will be borderline close to the GXL engine harness.

But you are also gonna need a lot more parts like a AFM, throttle cable, pressure sensor, etc.

And something to think about Kevin's site and write ups are one of the best for a description on the swap, if you are lost there, the swap may be over your current abilities.

OK Pay attention!!!

Im doing the same mod as we speak. think of it this way.....you are basically using every known Zenki (S4) part on the Kouki (S5) block. Dont worry about the transmission to engine mounts because all the 13 Bs are the same blocks, just different compression ratios.

You will be using the zenki front cover with oil metering lines and pump, water pump, fuel injectors and rails, fuel lines, intake manifoild, intake dynamic chamber, throttle body with the TPS sensor, zenki wiring harnesses, and the zenki ECU. The only Kouki parts you may use are the kouki turbo (boosts @ 0.9 Zenki's boost @ 0.8), and exhaust manifold.

Its a pain in the *** and is moderately difficult. Goodluck though....hope this helps

Remember that this is the US and he is swapping a non turbo S4 13B with a S5 13BT, so you suggestions mean that he really needs both a S4 and S5 13BT or a ton of S4 13B parts.

****and im also a little confused about how im going to wire this up being an s4 -> s5 turbo*****

I'd suggest going to the online manual for a series four and then a series five. Copy and print the pages in the fuel section that show the output/input for each pin on the ECU. Both model cars.

Match them up against each other. Make the adjustments that need to be made.

I'd rather run a few wires than remove and replace both the harness in the car. That removing/replacing harnesses is plain nutz IMHO.

Pardon me.....is a N333 series four? And I think you'll need a driveshaft to match the turboii transmission to the rearend. Seems your well on your way to success.

Well even if he does have a N/A 13B, I beleive he can still make the swap. He will need a bunch of other parts from a S4 like Icemark said. As long as he has those S4 parts in hand, he will be ok. Its probably best to find a used S4 13BT to use parts off of. The swap is possible...a little bit more work, but possible.
Wiring shouldnt be too hard at all. Thats why he needs the engine wiring harness off of a S4 turbo. If he already has a N/A S4 and uses a S4 turbo engine wiring harness, why wouldnt they connect with each other?? They are both S4's!!! Its the S5's wiring diagram thats totally different. If you want the power of a S5 then yes, be my guest and change out the whole entire wiring throughout the car...itll be a pain and very time consuming. Thats why when people do the S4 to S5 conversions, they usually swap all of the zenki parts onto a Kouki block. Its easier and faster...

The Turbo and N/A interior harnesses are also different, so that means he either re-wires and moves pins on the existing N/A front interior harness, or he replaces it with a Turbo interior harness. To top that off he has the plug location problems using a S5 engine, unless he does swap most of the top end over to S4 specs.

But the interior harnesses and engine harnesses don't just plug in perfect, between series or engines.

For example the knock sensor is only on the Turbos, and the interior harness does not even have the wires for it on a N/A...Same with things like the boost gauge and dash harness and Alt.

And Hailers, the N333 is the ECU from a 88 Turbo, the N332 is from a 86-87(but 87 model year) Turbo. The N333 is designed to work with the injectors that the 88 S4 and S5 cars come with.

See that is what is screwing you up as well...again the multi series thing rears its head.

As MiyaKokujin mentioned, you will need to get the S4 13BT injectors and engine harness (and front engine cover and intake) for the least amount of work.

If you get injectors and engine harness from a 86-87 13BT, then you will use the N332. If you get the injectors and harness from an 88, then you will use the N333.

The S5 injectors use a different plug than both versions of the S4 injectors, and while you might be able to adapt the 88 injector plugs (by swaping plugs and pins) and the N333 to work with the S5 injectors; unless you are skilled with rebuilding and disassembling harnesses and plugs you may run into problems.

Is there a particular reason why you must use a S5 engine instead of a S4 engine??? Using the S5 adds quite a bit more complexity to the swap.

what i was made to believe i have to do is basically swith intake assembly(tb,tps, manifold), the front cover, and fuel injection and wiring with all s4 stuff then wire it all up w/ s4 wire harness and ecu. am i correct or is this more work than neccessary?

yes you should be able to swap all those S4 things onto the S5 engine and make it work, BUT

You still will need to swap or custom wire the cars front dash harness to make the swap work.

And don't forget the Turbo tranny won't hook up to the N/A drive shaft, so you will either need a costom drive shaft, or replace the GXL driveshaft and rear end with ones from a turbo.
