Confused about tapping housing for temp gauge

I'm about to install a new water pump and housing in my 87 NA. Before doing so, I'd like to tap it for an autometer electric temp gauge, but I’m a little confused. Where is the best place to tap? (Next to the factory ECU temp looks likes the sender will hit the t-stat and on the top looks like it will hit the alt.) Do I want to tap into the front or back chamber? I know this has been asked before, but I'm just not getting it.

Thanks.

You're right about that. I installed mine there and then realised the t-stat couldn't be reinstalled. I drilled and tapped one of the redundant air pump mounting bolt holes instead. This required some internal grinding of the water pump housing to fully expose the sensor to coolant flow. Read my post in this thread for more info and a couple of photos.

Thanks. I was wondering if that would work.
