Anyway, there is a third function of the ACV, and that is the anti-afterburn valve. It injects air into the intake when you release the throttle to prevent afterburn during that rich condition. If this valve has frozen/sprung a leak, you will experience the problem that you described. Of course, you need an air pump for this to work.

That's what I was talking about, the Anti Afterburn Valvle!!!

That doesn't mean the ACV is working properly.

prmazdarx7-

Let me know if you could hook me up with a deal on an SAFC. Even if it is more than what you pay. I've no problem with paying YOU a profit as long as I can get a deal. If you can't then I understand, but if so that would be great. Just let me know. About the backfiring, I'd do as you said and change out your plugs and plug wires. There's a good chance that your plugs are fouled, especially if you are running rich. Also, if your plug wires have never been changed out, it wouldn't be a bad idea anyway. The person that owned my FC before I did decided he was never going to change plug wires. When I did it, my car ran much better. And like Irv said, the anti-afterburn valve could also cause such incessant backfiring. Make sure it's not bad. Any vaccuum leaks? Clean air filter? Just make sure you check even these obvious kinds of things. Good luck.

Also, if you don't have any cats, then your SAP may be a problem. I had mine tied up under the car with a blockoff plate for sometime, before finally removing it and capping off the opening with the rubber cap that goes over the idle adjust screw. What have you done with your SAP? Did you take it off, or what? If it is still on, did you block off the opening? Sorry if you've already answered any of these questions.

did you remove the dashpot when you did the TB mod? If so this is now out of adjustment and when the TB closes between shifts you get a fuel build up and the a nice back fire. The dash pot keeps the TB open just enough to keep things moving and prevent backfiring.

The SAP is the split air pipe. It runs from the side of the engine nearest the firewall to the main cat. When you get a mid pipe, there will be no place to connect the SAP. They sell a blockoff plate to cover the end of the SAP, but I didn't want to leave it tied up under the car, so I removed the whole piece and capped of the opening on the engine with the rubber cap that is supposed to cover the idle adjust screw on the throttle body. I can post some pics, but it won't be until the weekend as I'm quite busy with finals, work, etc.

If you want the pics, email me and I'll send them asap.

Yeah, No cats, and an airpump, your car will backfire loud as hell. If you remove your airpump, your car backfire will probably for the most part go away. Mine still backfires occasionally but it much more quiet then before. You can remove the Airpump and leave the ACV for now until you get the blockoff plate. The only purpose of removing the ACV is to free up space in your engine compartment and drop a little weight, but you don't HAVE to remove it.
