cold air intake

what is a good price that I should be able to get a cold air intake for my '87 GXL? I have been told it is a good investment and am also wondering if it is worth the $150 that I have been finding them for... Thanks for your help!!

no such thing as a cold air intake for your gxl, or any second generation rx7 for that matter, although there are "intakes", but that is just a cone filter and an adapter to put it on the flapper mass air flow meter. you can get a fresh air headlight cover to get the most out of the cone filter. check out www.rx7.com and you will most certainly find an intake for your car.

gxlspeeder:
There are CAIs premade for the FC.
Checkpoint Engineering makes one, and AzTech Rotary makes one... although they are basically identical.

Hagakura:
For the money, you are better off building your own much like others have done. Almost any form of CAI will require some modification, but you would do good to look up SureShot (he has pics from someone else's install, can't remember the guy's name... Nick something.) and cwsttu.

What gxlspeeder is referring to is the "open air intake kit" that almost anyone will provide, which is basically just an adapter and a filter, and will require one or two more parts for 100% proper operation. I suggest getting a hIGGItrix or other HKS-style adapter and whatever filter you feel comfortable with. Be it Apex'i, HKS, K&N, Blitz, or just a generic eBay filter (like I did!) in the 3" base variety. Colors will vary.

Hope this helps. Good luck. Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have.

They filter differently and perform differently.
Apex'i performs/filters the best on average.
I don't remember the rest.
As for the adapters, they claim the smoother transition of the HKS-style adapters makes more power, but I don't feel much of a difference is to be had.

if you want to see my setup then the link is below... as truespin88 suggested look at mine and sureshot, im currently doing a write up for my intake fabbing... mine is not as high as 150$ but it is pricey because i chose to use aluminum piping, that plus the cost of a good HKS adapter, and a promising filter is what is so high... anyhow heres the link to my setup... feel free to pm me with questions or just ask them on here

Aztech's CAI works awesome and requires no body cutting.

I don't think its for sale (yet). He's a close friend of mine, so he helped me build one using his design. Unfortunatly for you, I promised never to reveal his design without his approval.

http://www.aztechrotary.com/products_turbo_cai.php That's the closest you're going to get.
