Coilover Discussion

whats up guys
Here’s the situation. I am graduating collage and my dad is hooking me up with a new suspension. At least that’s what he said the other night. He’s not gonna buy me any thing like super expensive I think his limit at most would be 400. Any ways I was looking at the ground control coilovers. and trying to figure out what shocks im gonna run with them since there not acutally coilovers " " if you know what i mean. but that kit for those is like around 400 shipped. Just for the coilovers and then im gonna have to buy the shocks. but that’s gonna be like lets just say 600 for that all together. im making my fc into a track car / daily driver but I don’t care about the ride. I could have it as stiff as it could be and I would care as long as it handles like a dream. but I haven’t really herd about eh ground control kit that much every thing I have herd is good. but would like some help deciding what I wanna spend my money on and I don’t have that much. But I don’t know if I wanna spend that extra money I really don’t have and just get coilovers. I would get some coilovers if they where at a decent price. just tell me what you think I should do. or what you think on coilovers and suspension in general. thanks
Marshall

i have a friend who has the ground control setup with KONI shocks. for everything though it was around $900. It handles really really awesome, I was really impressed by it. I don't think youll be able to find any good coilovers for less than $800 though.

I have a set of shocks/springs put together for sale, if your interested give me a PM. Didn't officially post it up for sale yet. But if your looking to buy GC's new, there just shy of 400$. Which means your total of $600 is off. If you have to buy the shocks, you at least need KYB AGXs, which run for about 350 shipped. Tokico HP, and KYB GR2/Gasadjust(these aren't actually even made for lowered cars, only stock replacements, which is why they have bad reviews and are cheap) aren't made for that stiff of a set up. So AGXs would be the cheapest shocks you can run the GC. It's a nice set up, but it's about 750$ new. And if you want full coilovers, that 400 price tag isn't going to cut it unless something is seriously wrong or you jump on a deal super quick. That's my opinion, if anyone wants to comment on it, be my guest.

A stiff afforable setup for you, would be KYB AGXs' and RS*R race springs.

BTW in you signature, please fix the spelling error on "brakes" (...and appreciate, probably, cheap, they're, a lot, college... Your graduating college?!)

Haha, typical college grads, can't spell and such and they get good jobs...

save your $400 and save some more for real CoilOvers.

Used KYB AGX and good springs for $400

Sometimes the best thing to do is save up and wait it out for some good coilovers. I wish I did that the first time, but now I am. I am trying to save up my money for some good coilovers because I was not satisfied with a shock/spring combo. In my opinion that's the best thing to do, but that's just me.

Oh I'm a college student.....no grammar errors for me.....but I didn't graduate yet :/

I have ground controls with Eibach springs in the back and and front...Tokico HP's for shocks.

If you're thinking of buying coilovers, these are nice - but for what you'll spend piecing it together (I got mine used so thats why) you may as well buy some Stance coilovers or something else in a FULLY adjustable configuraiton.

But seriously, for track use - these are *decent*. Car handles very well - no complaints here.

BUT

With full R-compounds and a decent spring/shock combo (maybe tokico blues with eibachs) the car would be just as good. If you're thinking of making a trackable car - spend the bucks on a nice set of R-compounds for the track, you'll have a much more capable car as far as turn in, and overall traction then you will with a coilover and street tire combo.

IMO don't bother with coilovers or any overly-stiff suspension until you've got the chassis as a whole sorted out.

Meaning, replace ALL the bushings (with polyurethane ones...this will be the best upgrade you can get for the money), get DTTS eliminators (it's basically a given that the original DTTS bushings will be worn out anyway), reinforce the chassis at least with some strut tower bars (if not a roll cage and an assortment of member braces as well), and get wider wheels (at least 8 inches wide), with wider, stickier tires. And upgrade the brakes too, of course... and LSD will be basically required for any sort of performance driving above the newb level as well (especially drifting).

Anti-sway bars are really a matter of how you want to set the car up rather than something that has to be replaced (although the stock rear one is about as thick as a pencil...)... it's basically subjective.

By the time you have that much grip you're also gonna want a new seat and probably a harness for that matter...

HAHA! ^ That's basically what I'm doing. I've done bushings, DTSS eliminated, braces, sways, endlinks, 17x8's, 225/45/17 high performance tires, camber link for the rear, upgraded to 4 pot brakes, and I'm waiting to buy some good coilovers next year. I don't have an LSD yet, but honestly the ONLY time it's ever been an issue was at an autocross where my front sway came undone at an endlink, causing serious amounts of roll, only then did I spin the inside tire.
