Well, it's possible for both to fail. I'd check wiring to the coils for signal and do an ECU code check (search here or w/ google, I'll see if I can find the article and post it here on how to check ECU codes).

I've had 3 failed coil packs. I'm thinking of replacing the whole kit.

Also check the wires connected to the crank angle sensor.

A factory manual would be helpful if you could get one.

Best of luck!

No, dont think so. In order for the ECU to do anything, the engine must be running, because Emmisions Control Unit should work when there are actual emmisions that need checking

There is an easy way to find out though: take a good multimeter able to measure KV to your fuse box, disconnect EGI fuse, and check for voltage when you bump the ignition (the same can be achieved by measuring voltage in the first plug wires connectors, the ones on the distributor). That way you can check if the wires/plugs get any voltage. If there is no voltage, then its something before your starter. If the distributor gets voltage, then its your coils, wires, plugs, something else ...

Sorry cannt help you any further, I'm at work and dont have my manuals here...

Pull the small two wire plug off the Lead coil/ignitor assy, and see if you have 12v on the black wire with a yellow stripe. Also did you check the fuses and circuit that I mentioned in the earlier post???????? The fuses?>?? Do you have 12v on the little plug on the ECU, on pins 3I and 3J?????? They should be the two far left wires on the small plug.???????????? Gotta know what you find out to help out.

ECU = Engine Control Unit, ECM = Engine Control Module

It can be bad and prevent the engine from running (not likely, though). It has no control over starter function, as you said.

I beg your pardon. The ECU provides the signal for the coils to fire, the timing etc. No ECU power equals no coil power. Thats why we ask him to check the voltage at the black wire with the yellow stripe at the lead coil assy(I know that 12v does not originate at the ECU, so don't write back please) and the voltage at the small plug on the ECU. On a previous post he was advised to check certain fuses and the power at the ECU. Engine ain't gonna do JACK if theres no power at the ECU, except turn over under the power of the starter so that it'll wear down the rotor housings and some day soon do the click, click, click, click job, then he won't even be able to listen to it crank over.Just click, click.
There is available for free, online the factory manuals with wiring diagrams. One such site is http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/Technical_I...ice_manual.htm It has wiring diagrams that are super easy to follow.
Another site is at http:www.fc3s.org. freeeeee. no cost atall.
