Cobra Style Roll Bar on a 2nd Gen vert

I think it would be OK. The reason I ask is you can't do any speedventures or anytype of racing in a vert w/o a rool bar of some sort. The problem with the other style of bars is the vert top or trying to put it down. There is no room for bracing to go back and have a functional top.

I saw a Cobra at Fuddruckers car show the other day and the idea hit me. The single hoop on the cobra has that single bar for the triangle style bracing needed for a bar to remotely effective. The one a Fudds had the brace bar go from the side of the hoop "Forward" and attach in front of the shifter on the transmission tunnel on the passenger side.

One last thing the bar that goes from the "hoop" to the floor board on the passenger side could be made to be a removable bar. i.e. Bolt on.

Well some drift competitions down here in Florida only require that a convertible car have a rollbar or a top with a rollbar integrated into it like rx7 convertibles

You might be interested in this one.

I'd recommend clearing it with any track event organizers you will encounter before you order anything. It doesn't have any kind of rearward bracing but it does bolt to the seatbelt thingies.

I've seen that one form Kirk and yes it is nice. I was just thinking about something a little different.

Ah- thanks for the link, Gene- at least one 'vert owner is gonna go this route!

I was worried about targa clearance, but they even addressed that in the pics.

The real link to Kirk is www.kirkracing.com

For some reason they don't picture the vert cage. But they are very nice to speak to.

the bar from kirk does not fit as I would like it. It forces you to sit forward with the seat at almost a 90 degree angle. I am going to pic one up and start cutting and make it fit better. Also as it sits I don't believe its really safe because it does not have a third point on the floor that it bolts to. You should add a third point or it will be what kills you in a roll over.

THAT MY FRIEND is the reason for my post. I heard (and deduced from simple engineering) the same conclusion. As well as the custom fabricator that makes all the roll bars/cages for Mazdatrix Dave Lemons cars. ANYWAY those reason given is why I am asking about this type of roll bar. The third point is the part that comes forward and attaches to the tranny hump on the passenger side......you like?

Is there actually enough space between the seat and tranmission hump to fit a large enough bar?

I am not a fan of it coming forward. I would rather it bend at a 30 degree angle down to the trunk area. Then weld yourself some trunk X cross members to that and you will eliminate body roll with the top down. But all this is considering you already did a complete suspension upgrade and replaced all rubber worn out bushings with uerathane ones or its useless.

Sad to say not yet. I have not atacked the suspension just yet. I have just rebuilt the motor and have 1100 miles on it. I've chasing a lot of grimlens in other places. BUT the Mazfest was on the 7th and I would have liked to drive my car on the track for fun Yet I couldn't do that w/o a roll bar. Speedventures events have the same rules. I can learn a **** load of performance mods by being out at the track....just don't want to go and spectate. My car will pass tech inspection easily I jsut need a rollbar and go from there.

someone on ebay was selling these bars but it was just a moddified miata one and it was for looks not for saftey. By the time I am done with the kirk bar it might be modded into a dual hoop. I just want the top to operate properly. I have never been a fan of folding mine down. I alway take the targa off and but it in the leather bag in the trunk. So mine will be built with that in mind

I'm confused? Do you own an rx7 convertible, or some sort of other targa top car?

You're right about that.....but....If I my top were any more a PITA tehn I probably won't be taking the top down at all. In which case I'll just buy an '86 sport and be done with it. The top has to me easy

with the top down and the vert boot on it looks great. I need to make a new boot for when I take the targa off and stick it in the trunk

I need a boot. Period. Trying to score one but a few other things first.

I saw a red Turbo Vert the other day with very fresh paint and fresh interior like yours. He had the top down and a fresh boot over it and man the car looked as good as any offerings today.
