Clutch went out this morning

Hey guys, the clutch went out in my 88 Turbo this morning. I was leaving my house for work and it felt a little off, and as I went, the pedal got kinda clunky (like, instead of the smooth action to the floor, it was sorta clunking like a gear or something?) and it got really hard to get in gear. I turned around ASAP and was able to get it in gear enough to drive home, but the clutch pedal has zero resistance at this point and I can't get it in gear at all if the engine is running. Any suggestions on what I should check out first? Master/slave cylinders? Thanks! I've never done any transmissions stuff before so I am totally in the dark about what it could be.

Edit: Car is an 88 with an S5 Turbo motor. I think it has some aftermarket clutch, but I'm not really sure on the details.

If you're lucky (however, from your description you won't be) it's just the hydraulics.
Pop the hood and check for fluid leaks/level.
If that appears OK, you'll need to split the tranny from the engine and see what's up.

Sounds similar to what happened to me, it was the master cylinder. Pedal instantly hit the floor with no resistance.

I am a novice, but I think you would of noticed some clutch fade before it would just 100% crap out like that.

That happened to me except it was my pilot bearing, but let's hope your situation is just the hydraulics.

Sounds like the same issue I had. The hose from the master was pissing fluid all over the place. Hoefully it's just the hydraulics.

I ordered new Master and Slave cylinders, should get those tomorrow or wednesday. When the car is off, I can put it in and out of gear like nothing is wrong. The clutch now goes about 80% of the way to the floor like before (it was always pretty stiff so that's nothing new), but then it gets really really firm and definitely doesn't feel right. The fluid in the reservoir over the Master cylinder is still at max, and I don't see anything leaking anywhere.

Also can't start it, unsurprisingly, to test while running. Thanks for the tips.
