Clutch went out! Help!

My dad and I just finished putting my new clutch (and pressure plate, TO bearing, and pilot bearing) last night. It ran great, last night, this morning, and today. Until this one stop light. I stop. Try to put it back into first to go again....GRIND. try again....GRIND. Clutch isnt disengaging (or engaging, whichever...it's not coming off of the flywheel ) So I push it into the turning lane...as traffic backs up behind me. Then traffic in the other direction cleared so I pushed it through two lanes and into a parking lot. There I get out, pop the hood, check hydraulic fluid level, press the clutch: no bubbles. So while its shut off I press the clutch and shift...shifts fine, so I put it in 1st, try to start it and it lurches forward as it starts, the clutch pedal is pressed, but the clutch is still engaged against the flywheel. So I just let it roll and put it into a parking space and called my mom. I think the throw out bearing came off it's little hinge thingy since the clutch is not getting disengaged off of the flywheel. What do you guys think?

Could it be the throw out bearing or the slave cylinder, or what? It took us all weekend to drop the tranny and get it back in, we dont want to do it again, but if we have to, we will. Please help, thanks in advance

confused and stranded~ Chris

It's a hydraulic problem...Try bleeding the system. If that doesn't work, replace both cylinders (always replace both at once).

If it was the throwout bearing, you would be hearing noise...and lots of it.

Did you lube the tranny input spline shaft and pilot bearing well? IF not, this can cause symtroms like yours, keeping the clutch disc itself from freely sliding away from the flywheel when disengaged.

BUt yeah, check/replace your hydraulics first. Have someone measure slave cyl. rod travel when the pedal is pushed.

Just to add, watch the travel of the clutch fork. If the fork moves rearward, correspondingly as the pedal is depressed, it's in the bell housing. Broken fork, etc. If the fork doesn't move, or very little it's a hydraulic problem as Aaron has stated.

well...we went and checked it out, it's not the slave cylinder or anything hydraulic, it's something inside of the bell housing or transmission. I was thinking either broken fork or somehow the throw out bearing worked itself loose. The car was towed back to my driveway, but I dont know when we'll have time to drop the transmission. Thanks for your help guys, if I have anymore questions I know who to ask Thanks again

Forks very rarely break. Im betting on a lubrication problem or a pilot bearing improperly installed or lubed. Clean that input shaft and lube it with dry moly grease this time. Check to see that the pilot bearing is good and that is spins freely, lubed, etc.
