is a clutch upgrade necessary?
I soon intend to install a turbo in my 86 rx7 that will bring the rwhp from about 200 to 400 and I'm just wondering if I'll need to upgrade my current stock clutch and flywheel to withstand this increase in hp. If they can handle it, how long could I expect them to last? Both of them are brand new.
I don't think a stock clutch even brand new will hold 400 hp with sticky tires and an agressive driving style. So if that's the case then I would count on getting a 6-puck or 4-puck clutch kit. You can keep the stock flywheel, but it is pretty freaking heavy, some people prefer the extra weight for daily drivers or drag cars. Here's what you should do, put the turbo on the car and see how it goes! Let us know if your stock clutch could hold without slipping under 400hp, I'd like to know if it would (but, i'm doubtful it will).
I think it will either slip right away with 400 hp, or it will start slipping very, very soon after the power increase. Then again if you do a drag launch with it, I guess it might explode!? I've seen the friction surface ring thingy break free from the center hub section of a clutch disc (stock clutch) on a practically stock civic (happened at the drag strip).

This is how I read it:
Its an 86 N/A that he is putting a turbo on, so that means an N/A drive train.. That N/A clutch wouldnt stand a chance... Its barely enough to cope with the power of a stock N/A.
