clutch slipping when cold?
clutch slipping when cold?
as of late ive been having issues with my clutch slipping rather badly until it warms up, once it warms up it doesnt really slip and shifts fine except for when i start off it shakes rather horridly...should i just replace the clutch like i want to anyways or is there more to the problem than meets the eye...clutch fluid IS dirty as hell and is getting changed this weekend probably.. any thoughts or opinions
What kind of clutch is it?
OEM/ aftermarket? Single-/ double-/ triple-plate? Sprung, unsprung hub?
Before you go into yanking the puppy out, try this:
Put the rear-end on stands, get a can of brake cleaner and, have someone hand-spin a rear tire. While it's spinning, spray the cleaner into the inspection plate of the trans, onto the flywheel.
This can also be accomplished by removing the starter and spraying to that hole.
Spray the **** out of the flywheel and clutch assembly.
If you've not a couple of friends (one of which is a lighter, more petite chick) have one (her) sit in the car and hold the clutch in while you're spraying. If the wheel is spinning, the trans will keep the clutch engaged, off and on getting the surface crap off of the face of the clutch.
Fully bleed the clutch (just like doing brakes: Down (open-close).... Up.... Down (open-close).... Up.... etc), reassemble and drive.

Sounds like old clutch fluid that has moisture in it. When cold, (very cold) it will cause fluid to "freeze" up a bit. Once warmed, the clutch fully engages due to the fluid thawing. The clutch pedal probably feels like your stepping on goo when its cold and is slow to return.
