Clutch slipping? help!!

hey guys, Not too new to the board but I more or less read and explore before posting so I dont sound like a total rx7 noob. Anyway, I blew up my tranny so I replaced it with another one out of a 88rx7. Well the clutch was fine before taking off the tranny but when I reinstalled the tranny(5spd), My clutch is seriusly slipping all of a sudden. It wasnt doing this before. What coulda happened here?? All I had to remove is the clutch slave cylinder but even at that I didnt take it apart or anything. Just moved it outta the way.

Just seems like the clutch isnt engaging all the way, making it slip. What could cause something like this to happen?? I just want to take care of all possibilities before I go ahead and replace the clutch.

Oh, my car is a 88 rx7 also.

... rebleed the slave cylinder, and check to make sure theres no fluid in the boot.

It woudl suck to buy a new clutch kit if it was effed hydralics.

Next check to make sure the pistion moves the fork-- have a buddy watch.

Did you or didn't you install a new throwout bearing on the replacement tranny? Is the fork making contact with the TO bearing correctly?

Did you spill some oil or brake/clutch fluid on the pressure plate, clutch disk, or flywheel before you reinstalled everything?

Eh, I checked the throwout bearing and it seems fine. The clutch might have 20-30k at the most. It was replaced last year with new throwout, and pilot bearing. I didnt try bleeding it but I always assumed that if there was air in the line that the clutch would almost always be engaged at all times, not hardly engaged and slipping. Unless the slave is catching and not returning all the way. I read in my manuel that it might take up to 30-40 engine starts before a clutch will seat( whatever that means). Eh, Ill look into the slave cylinder a little more. Oh and I made sure that I installed the throwout correctly, and that the spring wasattached to the pivot on the fork.

I was wondering about spilled fluids of any type but the trannys were both empty and theres nothing else that would spill. If the rear main was bad it woulda slipped when the original tranny was good.

welp, I'm not sure then. Anyone know life expectancy on a clutch? If its OEM and you've been driving it hard...?

obviously I drive it hard sometmies, but the clutch was literally fine 2 seconds before I pulled the blown tranny. All I did was swap trannys. I disconnected the slave to do so. Thats all, and thats why im stuck scratching my head. Are all s4 non turbo trannies the same??? I did replace it with another 88 tranny. I dont know what model it came from though, but they looked identical.

did you realign the disc when you installed the tranny?
EDIT: and as far as I know s4/s5 n/a trannies are the same. I'm running a S4 tranny in my 90 S5 GTU  As for s4, s4.. I think they are all the same, with exception to the TII obviously.

no, I didnt realign the disc. Wasnt really necessary since I never unbolted the pressure plate. Well, I just found out that the tranny is the exact same model/year as mine so that excludes that possibility.

Pull the plug on the bottom of the tranny, up front, and feel around for the throwout bearing...If that's what it is...

What I mean is, I remember that I went to check to make sure that the clutch fork was on the pivot I accidently pulled it off, I then put it back on without remembering to insert the fork back into the throwout bearing. This would cause the throwout to be jammed against the pressure plate. I took off the slave again and went to wiggle the clutch fork to make sure that there was a little play, but it was solid stuck. didnt even wiggle when I tried to move it. So Im assuming that the throwout isnt properly mounted to the fork causeing it to ride the pressure plate not allowing the clutch to engage completely.

what ya think??? sound logical?
