Clutch question
Clutch question
wondering what ya'll think. i'm highly considering a race pressure plate(MT/RB) with a stock disk(don't want one without the wafer spring inbetween the friction materiel) and their aluminum flywheel(MT/RB). anyone have any experience with a setup like this? and or thoughts on said setup
How much power are you making? Is the engine just stock? If you haven't modded the engine, there's really no point in using "racing" clutch pieces. Why do you want to use a "racing" plate? Not lecturing, just curious. And a lightweight fylwheel has consequences for street driving, too, because of the loss of mass.
I told the guys at mazda trix what i'd be doing with the car. street driven with some road racing and that i'm not interested in a clutch without the wafer spring and that's what they suggested. i'm familiar with the results of a lightweight flywheel and they are acceptable to me. i'm not a driver that likes to be coddled, i prefer a machine that is easily controlled (do not confuse easily controlled with easy to control. for those that have driven them hard and know them i consider the AW11 an easily controled car. perhaps a machine that responds consistently is more accurate) and consider a lightweight flywheel a modification that will give the controls a greater resolution. on the pressure plate, really it's just because MT suggested it. a stiff clutch really doesn't bother me, actually i find it amusing when i go from a car with a stiff clutch back to one with a weak one, i don't even notice the clutch pedal below my foot as my foot is trying to go through the floor. almost forgot, yes the engine is stock unless you consider a RB DP/PS and CS catback and a disappearing act performed upon the air pump/ACV to be significant. the engine at some point in the future may very well not be stock, but at this point it is.

I don't really see that this setup is going to cause you problems...but again why are you bothering if you aren't making the power to require a clutch upgrade?
just trying to eliminate as much parasitic loss as possible?

oh, i forgot to menition. the stock engine managed to pop the tranny. so while the tranny is being replaced(seeing as it's out already) i figgure what better time to get to all these things as i don't really want to have to go in there again in another however long it takes for my clutch to say "screw you, i'm out". the transmission is pretty much why all this is getting done. i was taking off from a light in 1st and heard a loud snap followed by the car going nowhere. at first i thought it was the driveshaft(i looked and didn't see it on the ground) then figgured maybe the exhaust was holding it up. then about 20 min later it hit me, it was still making noise with the tranny in netural. i restarted it and turns out i have every gear but 1st avilable. so i drive it to the shop doing the work(and i must say the tranny was making some very interesting noises on that drive...) and that's where it is now. any thoughts on why a stock tranny would be going at 136k miles? are they really that weak?
