Talking Clutch Pilot Bearing Removal Tool

Will this pilot bearing remover work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-MINI-PILOT-B...QQcmdZViewItem

I cringe at the thought of dropping $112 on a remover from MazdaTrix.

Cheers,

not if the tool is as pictured, the fingers should be facing out not in.

the loaner tools from kragen and autozone generally work fine, as i bought the one from kragen since it worked just fine for these engines. the only time when you usually will have an issue where the pullers don't work is when someone installs the bearing all the way into the e-shaft and bottoms it out.

Auozone free rental puller FTW!

When that doesn't work, I just notch the race with a pencil sized die grinder and pry the edge up with a screwdriver. The you can grab it with pliers and pul it out.

Oh yeah - something else I've tried and been successful with - the LAST time I tack welded a long bolt to the inside race with my wire feed. Just a little tack. Then I pried it out using the bolt.

hey man,
i work at advance and we have one in our loaner tool dept. the way it works at advance is, you can pay 100% of the cost, and either return it within 45 days or keep it. if you keep it, it has a lifetime warranty, and i have seen other people use it on rx7s, but havent done mine yet.

If you scroll down in this thread, I posted a method using a bolt and washer that you may want to try. For me, it's quicker than driving to Autozone, and it's always worked, but it requires a little bit of clearance behind the bearing.

There's also a toilet paper method (hydraulic, actually) that I saw on the first generation forum, but I've never tried that one.

I used an Autozone puller when I did mine. At first it seems like it doesn't fit... but a little coaxing will get it in there, and even more coaxing will get it out.

Good luck, buddy.

And the parts are in the mail. Check your PM's.

James

The one at advance auto works perfectly from the box. I've used it both times I've pulled the pilot bearing with good success.

I'm sure spending $100 on a pilot bearing remover is worth it if you own a shop or multiple cars but I'm not going to replace my clutch often enough to justify it.

Here is a link with info on the advance auto tool: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...0&page=1&pp=15
The useful info is on page 3, but read the whole thing for a good laugh, courtesy of Hailers.

i changed my clutch on sunday from an OEM to an ACT stage 1 on my 90 gtu n/a and when i tried to take out the pilot bearing it was a definite "no go". it looked fine so i just left it in there and changed the clutch and the plate...is that really bad or will it be okay?

I got crazy and bought the mazdatrix for my first time engine built :P :P :P
Anyway, i took 5 sec and the bearing was out! If you can loan something similar, do it.. 100USD for a tool (like that!!!) is much..

Hmm, I've had 4 rotary cars & getting ready to replace my 4th PB. Let us know how yours turned out, but seems like the $12 investment for a new one is worth it.
