Clutch pedal installation
Well, I finally got my old automatic style brake pedal out, what a pain in the #@$, I had to pull the steering column out and it still didn't want to come out easily. I'll post some pictures later tonight of what it looks like so far, with everything out. For those who are thinking about doing it, I hope you have lots of free time! (Btw, whats does the switch on the automatic brake pedal do? Allow you to shift into gear from park/etc?) I was going to just take that switch off and put it on the other brake pedal so i didn't have to change the wiring, would that cause problems?

I think that switch is so that you have to have the break on in order to start up the car. Kind of like in manual there's this switch on the clutch.
I didn't carry it over, and I didn't hook up the clutch switch either.
What I wanna know is, what is that switch on the gas pedal?

Theres a switch on the gas pedal? I didn't even notice. I saw two switches on the clutch and was wondering what those were for, I think I am going to hook up the clutch one (just incase) and i Believe that the switch for the brake is to start it & for the brake lights, I'll figure out which one later tonight. Did you have to take out your entire steering column as well?

yes I had to take out the all the **** below the steering culmn. But not all the way. I had to move column side to side in order to jog the pedal assembly in, and it sucked big dogie.
okay now that you mention it. the switch on my break is hooked up.
Yes, there's this weird switch on the gas pedal, and it wasn't there on the manual. I unhook it, and nothing happens. I hook it back up nothing happens. So, I don't know what it is.

Why would the gas pedal be different on a manual compared to automatic? I wonder if I have it too, I'll have to take a look. I Tried wiggling my steering column side to side, but that didn't work at all, it got stuck and then I got pissed and hit it with a hammer and bent the old automatic one up (whoops), then I just removed the steering column and it fell out. I think i must have removed at least 3 boxes under my dash that said 'security' on it, then someone had wired an alarm up through clutch hole in the firewall, so I had to cut the wire between there, hope I can reroute it somewhere else.

I know it. Christ I spent an hour under there with my back all bent up, and dust falling in my eyes.
as far as that switch goes, i'll take a picture of it. Maybe I can post it, but I can't seem to post any pics on the forum? (???)

e-mail it to me and I'll slap it up on my website, email is rat@rodent.uplogon.com. Also, what happens if i dont hook up that 'push brake to start' thing, or should I just cut the connector and cross the wires for good? Ever start your car in gear and forget the clutch?

okay, just took a picture.
well, I know that the white and green wires are the brake light parts.
because when I unplugged them, the brake lights didn't work
But the other ones I don't know.
I'll send the pic now

It's ok, i have gigs and gigs of space. I was told that on S5's, that the switch is a fuel pump cutoff sort of thing so you don't flood the car when starting I guess. Similar to the toggle switches everyone installs. Thats what I was told at least!

Wooohooo! I finally finished my conversion, clutch pedal is installed and everythings working, however I don't have a master cylinder yet, and in the process I broke a few things, but nothing that can't be fixed. I'll have pictures later.

I have a question, is the clutch pedal supposed to stay on the ground when pushed in if the master cylinder isn't bolted on? I notice if I press it it goes down so far then it pulls itself to the floor and doesn't come up any.

Theres this return spring attached to the pedel assembly. But If there's no fluid in the cylinder it will stick sometimes. It shouldn't have anything to do with the master cylinder, that is, unless you clutch cylinder is apart of it. Mines not

the files under 02-15-2002 are the newest (and what I did today)
Remove some stuff under the hood
Removed the broken sunroof
I also noticed I don't have one of those switches on my gas pedal, so I guess it's not for series5's?

What was it like taking out the top of the inside ceiling? Do you think you could post a picture of the sunroof motor?
Yeah, i don't know what that thing is. Ive been too lazy to check out the manual's electrical diagrams. Do you know what the 20,000 mile switch is? And, if your fifth gear switch fails, does that mean that top spped will lag if you're trying to really get on it?

Well, the sunroof sucked at first because it wouldnt budge, but then i broke it open (whoops) and I was able to take the trim around the sunroof opening off then, I then took all the trim off top headliner, and it simply came down with a few clips, no problems at all. I did run into a problem getting the sunroof down, but that was because it was half open and my automatic seat belt rails were in the way, i just unbolted them and pulled them back a little, and down it came. I'll take a picture of the motor tomorrow if you wish.

yeah. I gota haynes man also. And it "indicates" these switches but doesn't really explain what they do.
I wish I could go through my haynes manual and be like:
"Hmmmm, 20,000 mile switch."
"Oh, here it is...20,000 mile switch."
"It says that this switch goes off when you hit 20,000 miles and regulates the Smashergaster. The Smashergaster protects the transmission so it doesn't explode and send large shards of metal through your ***."
(scratches head)
"Well I don't want large shards off metal in my *** so I guess I should make sure it works right"

Only automatics.
You see one of the mazda engineers thought, "Anyone who buys one of these with an automatic is dumbing down the gene pool. So we'll make it explode at 20,000 miles. Hopefully, we'll kill them *** first."
And another engineer pointed out, "****, we'll get sued".
He replied, "So we don't get sued, we'll put in a '20,000 mile' switch. Affectionately known as the: ***-KA-BOOM switch "
