I know that there is a clutch switch, but I'm not sure if it's connected to the ignition. I'll go check a wiring diagram.

According to my '86 FSM. it seems that the switch is only used for cruise control. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's all I saw of it in the wiring diagram.

There is a switch on the clutch pedal, it keeps you from starting your car when you have it in gear. I had to reach up under my dash for weeks when I first got my car, untill I just took it out.

There's a clutch INTERLOCK switch at the top three inches of the clutch pedal. There's another further down the pedal that is for cruise.

Pull the connector off the INTERLOCK pigtail and jumper the two wires on the harness plug. Start the car out of gear. If it works now, then the switch is suspect. Buy another. If it did not change the problem, its another thing then. Probably the starter solenoid.

Download the fsm for free and read it.

If you're talking about your 1986 GXL as listed in your public profile, your car does not have a clutch interlock switch.

Only the 87 and later have the starter lock out.

Has nothing to do with ignition. Only prevents the starter from being cranked unless the clutch is in.

Small technicality, but I think Mazda changed it mid-year.
My '87 Turbo II (early build) can hit the starter without pushing in the clutch.
Yep, I've done it a few times. :P

Yeah, some of the 86 turbos were VIN labled and sold as 87 models.

But my old Sport which was (according to the VIN) the 22nd US spec '87 to be built, it had it.

I shoulda looked at the year car. I have a 87 with the Interlock and one 87 without. Irv had a 87tuboii without one also.

So take a look and make sure you don't have the Interlock sw then stop pushing the clutch pedal. It's doing you no good. IF your hearing a clicking each time you try to go to START, and finally it does start after several tries, then look to your starter solenoid as being kaput IF your battery positve and neg cables are on good and the battery negative lead is attached firmly to your starters outboard attach bolt or at least to one of the bell housing bolts.
