clutch & flywheel shopping

Why are the ACT 4 & 6 puck clutches cheaper than the HD clutch? They all come with pp, and both bearings. Is it because they wear out quicker, are they(4 & 6 puck) not very streetable, or is it simply supply and demand?

Does anyone have the 4 or 6 puck with an aluminum or lightened steel FW? How's the drivability?

I have the ACT 6-puck (pictured below). I think they're cheaper because they have no springs and therefore are cheaper to produce.

I have the factory TII flywheel and NOT a real high-pressure pressure plate. I have just the Bönez street/comp presure plate.

I had the Bönez disc also with their pressure plate. That disc lasted exactly 14 drag starts at 360(+-) rwhp.

I reused the Bönez street/comp presure plate but, installed the ACT 6-puck disc. I can't make it slip even with 5.5k rpm launches and the street/comp plate.

It is more difficult to drive, from a stop. It is more difficult to drive until the disc gets hot. It actually works better when hot. You do get used to it though and, no slipping!

It will be even more difficult to get going from a stop, in normal driving, if you have a light flywheel.

Remember, a light flywheel is NOT the best thing to have if your primary interest is drag racing. You'd want that energy from that heavy, spinning flywheel to get you off of the line in a drag race situation.

I blew up the engine at 11k miles on the 6-puck. Before pulling out the engine, I just assumed that the disk would need to be replaced and I bought one. I didn't replace it. It looked perfect after those 11k miles with many drag starts and 376+ rwhp.

Hows the streetability? I plan on building up a turbo 13B for my FB and I need a clutch that can hold plenty of power. I was thinking about either a 6 puck clutch, or a Tilton double plate. It wouldnt be for my daily driver, but it would be driven on the street.

The only stuff I know is what I wrote above. There are people here that have those more sophisticated setups. Maybe they'll post.

Good Luck,
Mike

This car will be my daily driver, but it will go to the track occassionally and probably some street racing as well. The clutch needs replacing and I want to upgrade. This will not be a high HP rocket, just some tinkering to get it to a respectable level. The motor has 158K on it, so a SP or J spec is possible in the future.

My son now has my OLD Bönez disc in his 220(+-) rwhp TII.

It slipped with mine but, does not slip in his with his lower power. I think you can do just fine with an organic disc(easy driving) and a slightly upgraded, over stock, pressure plate. I suggest the Bönez setup or similar for you.

Do you know where I can find a Bonez supplier? Do you recommend the Bonez over the ACT?

http://rx7.com/ for Bönez. Probably not the cheapest place.

I'll bet that neither company actually makes their own organic discs, or regular pressure plates. I think either manufacturer would be fine for you, until well over 300 rwhp.

If your primary interest is autocross, road racing or, street racing from NOT a stop, a light flywheel should be best.

I have never autocrossed, but I'd like to get into it. I just moved to the Detroit area, and I'm still learning my way around. I love to get on the highway and run. The motor has quite a few miles as I mentioned b4, and I have no record of the clutch ever being changed.
The ACT is quite a bit cheaper than the Bonez, that prolly will pull me that way. I can't get it until the first of the year, so I still have time to decide. Thanks for your help, guys. Feel free to advise.........

Does anybody have a Mazdatrix HD clutch & pp? They are suprisingly cheaper than the Bonex street comp and ACT HD.

There is probably a reason the Mazdatrix one is so much cheaper. Im planning on dropping a mild T2 into my NA mainly cause i dont want to swap the whole drive train yet. Does anyone know what clutch and Fly wheel I would need to use?

What year NA? Are they the same year? You would need to match the motor for the FW and clutch, easiest method.

The NA is 225 mm and the turbo 89-92...235 mm or 86-88.....240 mm. Most performance clutches for 86-92 Turbos are 240mm. If the NA tranny does work, it prolly won't hold up very long, so you'd need to swap it out soon after.

Do you not have the TII tranny that was w/ the motor?
