clutch change question
im going to ahve to switch over my clutch in a little while here, its starting to slip. all ive got to work with here are jack stands, and im jsut wondering if they will be enough to make room to drop the tranny with it only up on stands? or do I need a lift to drop it. is it only that center cross member that holds it in place? (as well as the bellhousing bolts of course). how do I remove the driveshaft so I can slide it back a little? do I need to at all?

Yes you will have enough room to drop it. You don't need a lift. The cross member and the mounts attatched to it hold it onto the car. There are a few electrical connectors on it too. The speedo cable also has to come off unless you want to rip it off. The drive shaft has four bolts at the differential flange that are 14mm and need to be removed to drop the shaft. You should change your tranny oil while you're at it man.

the easiest way to do it without crushing yourself is, once you've removed everything except the rear tranny mount. Position a regular floor jack under the tranny directly under the gear box (the square part of the tranny in front of the rear mount) and jack it up until it just barely lifts it.
Remove rear tranny mount, keep tranny balanced on floor jack
This way you can use the floor jack to roll the tranny back and disengage it from the eccentric shaft, while you balance the tranny using your free hand.
-Be sure to pull the tranny back when you do this, don't pull the floor jack, you'll end up with the tranny slipping off the jack.-
once its disengaged, drop the jack to the floor and slide the tranny out from under the car.
