Thumbs down Clutch broke. Literally. Guidance needed.

I just had my girlfriends t2 rebuilt. She bought the car with low compression and the reason was due to the previous owners father rebuilding it incorrectly. I ended up having a lot of parts replaced, however, I am happy with the end result.

Her flywheel looked a little glazed over and feels like butter, but I never said anything because I've already spent a whole butt load of money. Clutch still has life and it drove fine, so I tossed it in the pile with the other parts.

Well, I was going over what gaskets I needed to re-assemble her engine. Looking at the flywheel in disappointment, I grabbed the clutch and it fell apart in my hands. One of the "pucks" on the flywheel side came right off! So I picked up the clutch and another one fell off!

What's the deal?! I think the previous owner said she put a clutch masters clutch in. Am I remembering correctly?

I know I'm fVcked and need to purchase a new setup. Is this a common issue with this clutch? Most clutches I have seen (owned) have rivets holding the pucks on. I don't know what I am asking. Just please guide me in the right direction. I feel lost at the moment.

Thank you.

Flywheel resurface HIGHLY recommended, that **** looks like alien skin, and not the hot kind.

I'm sure there are lots of clutch options, and as many threads discussing which ones are good for what and which ones are good for nothing.

Maybe this reflects my lack of experience with clutch disks but I'm surprised to see different contact configurations on either side of the disk. I've put in hi-performance clutches in a few cars and the contact patches were always identical. I just installed the Excedy disk and pressure plate assembly in my car and I'm very happy with it.

That looks like a centerforce clutch. I had one in my N/A and it felt like garbage.

As other have said, your flywheel look like it has seen some serious heat so I would not be surprised if the clutch was damaged.

@REAmemiya_Fan Exedy. Check.

@SpikeDerailed I'll check into resurfacing. I didn't know it was that cheap.

@Japan2La PM sent for a price.

Thank you all for the responses.

+1, do the flywheel while you're at it, do like I did, you won't regret, $1000 (everything pictured) purchased at Mazdatrix.

It may not be. When I had mine done that shop charged me around $50 I think. Still necessary though. If turning it is 75% or more of the cost of a new flywheel, consider just getting a new one. Otherwise...

Buy some sweet super single or twin disc clutch from Japan2LA.

I reccomend a LW flywheel while you're at it too.

Your girlfriend also has horse teeth if I'm thinking of the right thread.

That is not nice to say.

A lightweight flywheel is out of my budget (already spent a lot on the rebuild) and a three puck clutch is a bit too much for a 115lb girl who will be daily driving the car.

I ended up getting a freshly resurfaced flywheel and new exedy stage 1 clutch kit from Mr Japan (Thank you).

Thank you all for the input and recommendations. Anyone else have this same thing happen to them? I still can't get over how the pucks were just glued on?!

Hate to disappoint, but fortunately my teeth are perfectly fine.

You've got a centerforce dual friction. That's why the pucks came off. It happens about 50% of the time with these.
