Red face Clutch AWOL.

Drove the Rodeo home from a long distance job on Friday… I wanted to put it in the garage and pick up the Convertible to use while I am away. Drove around home a while, then got on the highway to go visit a friend. Shifting up on the on ramp, I though, “that felt strange.” From then on, each shift was a little less sure. By the time I reached my friends’ house, the clutch pedal was dead. I could press it all I wanted, but no soap.

Adding a little more dot 3 to the reservoir, I was able to get a little action from the clutch (enough to get it into first gear and to hold the clutch in until I could get a clear shot into traffic.

All the way back home, I shifted without the clutch until I got off the highway. From then on, I had to shut down the engine to get it into first gear before I could move again. With more clutchless shifting, I was able to get the Vert back into the garage where it will have to sit for the next 6 months until I am home again for good.

(I count myself lucky I was not on the way back to work [300 miles])

I probably just need to rebuild the clutch master and slave, but if I need to separate the engine and transmission, I am trying to decide if I should go ahead and pull the engine too.

It has 200K miles, and it performs well, with occasional smoke.

Any opinions?

BTW, does anyone know if you can reach the clutch slave cylinder - with big hands?

.

Just go in from the top, might have to remove your throttle body/manifold for an NA though.
Other than that it should be easy

I opened the hood and took a look today, it looks like for once I get a break in the "difficulty level" dept.

The slave cylinder sits right atop the clutch housing, beside the oil filter. It should be a quick job if I can find the rebuilt master and slave.

Get your slave and master at www.nopionline.com
~50 for the set.

Master to slave SS braided hose at www.mazdatrix.com
~18.

Replace and brag to everyone that you replaced all of your clutch hydraulics for a mere 75 or so.

Thanks for the tip!

I can almost never find parts for the rx7 locally.

I got the parts from NOPI. They were half the price of Advance Auto and a quarter the price of Mazda. Thanks Josepi.

Slave took ten minutes to replace - no usual gotchas.
