Which clutch?

Hey guys and girls. I've searched the forums and couldn't come up with an answer to my question. I believe my clutch is slipping. I have an '86 N/A. When I'm in 4th gear and get a little bit on the accelerator I hear my engine rev higher but it doesn't necessarily match what my speed should be. Say for instance I get a little bit on the accelerator in 4th and back off slightly; the engine would have revved up a bit, come back down, then catch where it SHOULD be in terms of RPM. If I get on the gas too hard, the engine keeps revving but I never let it get too high before backing off. This whole thing also occurs in 5th gear, but I'm not sure if it occurs in the other gears. I'm thinking that it probably does, but since I'm generally not cruising in 1st and then gunning it I don't notice it. If this sounds like clutch slippage please take a look at the attached image. This is from the Advance Auto website. While looking at these packages I was a bit confused by them. I know I can't get a TII clutch set because it won't fit (not that I care too anyway), but what about the convertible clutch set. Instinct tells me that it shouldn't be different, but I'm just not sure. I'd appreciate any input you guys have.

I used to have a 87 base, and that's about what it feels like when the clutch starts to go out bad. eventually it will slip so bad you can't even move the car in any gear. now, that being said, it is POSSIBLE that the problem is with other clutch components and it might not be ther clutch. point is, if yer gonna change the clutch be sure to check/replace yer clutch line, slave cyl. and of course pilot and thowout/release bearings.

BTW, the clutch and tranny for the N/A coupe and the N/A vert should be exactly the same so yes, that should be fine.

personally I got an ACT "street/strip" clutch for my replacement and LOVE IT!!!!

good luck, hope this helps

i personally like SPEC brand clutches. check them out if you have time. definatly sounds like your clutch is slipping. replace it with a "clutch kit" and make sure you surface the flywheel and if you can, replace the pilot bearing.

How many miles are on your car? I'm guessing over 100k. Thus, the stock clutch has been good for over 100k miles. So why not just get an OEM replacement?

Sorry it took so long to respond back to this thread; RX7club.com is wonky with it's e-mail notification. Yeah, the car has over 100k. Do you guys think that piecing together a clutch kit from Mazdatrix would be a better option than AdvanceAuto? If it's going to cost me more to get an OEM clutch kit from Mazdatrix, I'd rather just get a clutch kit from AdvanceAuto. SpooledupRacing: Are those Exedy clutch kits snappy on the engagement? My car has ~130k miles and I haven't replaced any bushings or mounts (transmission, engine, etc.) so I don't want a clutch that is going to break my drivetrain.

I'm scared to say because I might get e-stabbed. I picked up a Perfection clutch kit from AdvanceAuto. I haven't really seen much talk about them on the boards, but it came with a 1 year warranty (which may or may not come with other clutch kits). I'm not drag racing, so 6 or 4 puck is out of the question. I haven't changed bushings and drivetrain related mounts so I don't want something super-snappy when it comes to engagement. This is supposed to be an OEM replacement clutch.

eh, well no e-stab here, but i wouldnt have bought it. but it may do just fine, i dont have any experiance with them. good luck though, let us know how it works out after the install

EDIT: for the right price i might buy it, thats if i was looking to get back on the road fast and didnt have much cash to spend. even now, im currently out of a job and broke but i still saved up enough for a centerforce. but like i said, maybe the perfection clutch kit is actually what its named

Yeah, I know, but my main concern was having it right now. My clutch started slipping worse and I really needed to get this done like NOW. I honestly didn't think it would get this bad so fast.
