cluster lights problem...

ok, so when i turn my lights on, the dash will light up just fine for a few seconds and then just turn off. all the other lights work in the car with no problems...

it dosnt do that everytime though. sometimes when i turn the lights on, the dash will not light up at all. and other times it will. but it never stays on for more than 5-6 seconds.

any ideas what could be the problem?

to the OP. I would check your headlight switch harness. You may have one that is burning up and needs to be replaced. Also check the connection to the back of your cluster. Make sure its pretty clean where the contacts are and not gummed up. But my lights did the same thing back when I first got my TII and I replaced the switch. It lasted for a day or so and burned that switch up. Found out it was the harness. Fixed that and its been fine for almost 2 years now. Pull the harness out and inspect it really good.

misterstyx69, replace your bulbs. I think they are 158's but can't remember the brand. Super easy and cost like $5. I just did it and had the same problem you stated. Just that half of my speedometer would light up. They are 20 year bulbs and need to be replaced if the filament is brittle enough to not work until you thump it. lol. I tried that at first and it worked. Just replaced them all tho in about 10 minutes.

i checked the harness thats connects the cluster to the main harness and its almost new. it grounds to the steering column mount. so i cleaned up the ground and made sure it was a clean connection. I then checked the harness from the headlight switch to where it connects to the main harness. all looked good also. all connections look clean...

just to add, the hazards work just fine but the blinkers do not work.

is there a way to test these switches?

I cant just get another one and try cause this is a right hand drive set-up. and they are different. i tryed plugging in a LHD headlight switch and after about 2 seconds of being plugged in it started smoking like when you cross wires.
